Unable to delete folder on NAS
I am a newbie at this but would very much appreciate some help. I am trying to delete (using Vista) an empty folder on my ReadyNAS. I get an error in Vista: "Destination Folder Access Denied - You need permission to perform this action." I try to change ownership in Vista but get nowhere. I am guessing it has to do with permissions on my folder on the NAS. Under Frontview the share name is media. Under advanced options the Share Folder Owner is listed as "nobody" and the Share Folder Group is listed as "nogroup." What do I need to do to get this in order so I will be the owner of these folder under Vista? Thank you.

I updated to 4.2.19 as part of this but was having the same problem under 4.2.17. When I try to delete the folder under OS X Lion (10.7.0) I get an error message that says "The operation can't be completed because the item 'Windows Disks' is in use." When I try to delete the folder under Win7 SP1 I don't get an error message but the folder doesn't delete.
Is your VM file in use? - RoborisAspirant

I actually run the VM on my Mac laptop. This is just a backup of the machine in case my laptop takes a digger. I know OS X Lion has been a challenge but I never tried deleting this particular file under a different version of OS X. I sent in a log file I created during all this but let me know if I should try something else. - DTschoolITAspirantI am having these exact same issues. I have about 75 users sharing roughly 15 different shares. Whenever files are moved, the permissions don't seem to be set in the new directory.
Also, users have their own files come back as read only after another user who had write permissions, makes and saves a change.
This has been going on for a few years, though as the use of the readynas has increased, it becomes more and more of a problem to constantly reset all the permissions(which fixes the issue).
Why is this occurring? What is the problem with the readynas and assigning permissions? I love the readynas however it is getting to a point that i will have to move to another product if this cannot be resolved.
Thanks in advanceMSD wrote: Observation:
I have being trying to do a process of elimination.
One or two folders have NO permissions assigned to them. How can that be?
I can confirm that this folder may have been created via extracting content from a WinRAR file and across to NAS.
Any Ideas?
manually assigning permissions via Folder Properties (on PC) will then allow deleting. But question is how can a folder be placed onto NAS with any permission being assigned
New Observation: After trying to move a folder that failed. I came back to it say 30 mins later and it works. It's like as though the NAS is unsure of permissions and overtime recognises who you are and then allows changes. Strange. I tested this twice and in both cases worked.
Anybody have any theroies on this?
ANOTHER EDIT: This seems like a Permissions carrying forward Issue, I noticed that when I moved a folder from one directory to another, upon checking the permissions, it shows as None.
Both locations are Subfolders of the "Media" I have a Folder called "To Watch" and another called "Watched". When I watch something I move it.
SHARE PERMISSIONS on MEDIA = : CIFS: Read Only with Write Enabled users being myself ADMIN1. I can't add Admin as I believe it would by default have access regardless. There isn't any consistancy as Out of the 10 folders I moved in just now, some can be changed ad others can't. Keeping in mind ALL could be changed (as I just moved them). ALL were moved from "To Watch" to "Watch". Why is it that some can no longer be (name) changed and some can.

The folder I'm having trouble deleting is named:
Sigur_Ros_Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust_320kb
I am able to connect as admin and create a folder in the share and verify it (and change) it's permissions. For the problem folder, the permissions panel in OS X says "You have unknown access", and I am not able to delete the folder. - ewokNETGEAR Expert

Was this file copied over using your Mac? Perhaps try rebooting the Mac and see if it clears any lock files it may have. - ewokNETGEAR Expert

Assuming they're going over the CIFS protocol, try playing with the Advanced CIFS Permissions settings for the share. Some programs will create a new file when saving edits instead of overwriting the old one, which can reset the permissions on the file to something undesireable. - ewokNETGEAR Expert

Are you connecting to the NAS over CIFS or AFP? - coulstonAspirant

The files are being moved by cut and paste...by a user that has read/write priv for the share. the files are being moved within that share to another folder in that same share. after the successful move, the files cannot be accessed by the user or other users. resetting the permissions instantly corrects this issue. why does this occur? it seems as though the permissions are not being set, though ive had users report that sometimes if they wait a while and try again the files work. Any ideas as to what would cause this behavior?
thanks
also ive tried checking and unchecking the "set permissions automatically" for new files. what is the advantage/disadvantage of this? if you are not setting the permissions automatically, what permissions will the file receive? the permissions of the parent? Is this used to set permissions different than those of the parent? - ewokNETGEAR Expert

I'm connecting over AFP.
You may want to try posting a topic in the Mac forums. Unfortunately, I don't have access to a Mac, so I can't reproduce the issue. You may also want to try connecting to the share as admin over CIFS and see if that helps.
