Upgrading all drives in ReadyNAS 314
Hello I have a RN314 with latest OS 6.10.6. I don't care about the data on the RN314 (my data is already backed up on 2 other devices).
My intention is to pull out the 4 old drives and put 4 new drives in. However, I'm not sure of some details like:
- Should this be done with power on or off?
- Do I need to do a factory reset? (If so, what is the procedure to do a factory reset?)
I have already gathered that I need to uninstall any apps and destroy the existing volumes first before proceeding. Please help me nail down the process so I can get on with it instead of wondering if I'm doing things in the wrong order.
Thanks.
Out of curiosity, if I remove all 4 drives, where does the OS reside? Is there a 5th drive in this thing for the OS?
All you need to do is
- power down
- remove the existing disks
- insert the new (blank) disks
- power up.
The system will do a fresh factory install onto the new drives automatically. No need to do a factory reset.

No, there's no need for either step in this case. It's best not to do either, as that gives you the option of reinserting those disks (powered down) if you need to extract anything that's on the NAS now.

The OS resides on the disks. There is an installation image in the NAS flash memory - when you power up (as described above), the system will format the new disks and install the OS.
