Users can only read but not edit new files - 4.2.19 nogroup

ReadyNAS Ultra 2 Plus with 2x2TB discs
RAIDiator 4.2.19
Connecting from W7 and XP machines, and one remote XP machine via readynasremote.

The issue is that any file created by a connected user can only be edited by that user, users in the same user group can open and read the file but not edit.
Any help appreciated.

I have followed the user Netgear guide, also checked out many posts on this forum, with setup as follows:

userA belongs to group "users" as their primary group.
userB belongs to group "users" as their primary group.
userR belongs to group "remote" as their primary group, however there is a separate issue relating to this.

I copied lots of data onto the NAS from an old machine, then set file permissions using the Advanced options tab tick box and appling.
All files then had security when viewed in Windows as:

For a file \\RNAS1\test\testdoc.txt in the "test" share wiewed using file properties in Windows, security tab I see:
Group or user names:
Everyone
nogroup (Unix Group\nogroup)
test (RNAS1\test)

If a user created a new file, the file security looks like this:
Group or user names:
Everyone
nogroup (Unix Group\nogroup)
Len (RNAS1\Len)
The difference now is that the user Len has access. Other users can see and read the file, but not edit it.

After reading many posts on this forum, few of which mention what and how the "nogroup" works, in the Advanced Options tab I then set:
Share folder group: users
Instead of "nogroup", and ran the set owner and permissions etc... for file access problems.
NOTE: the readynas raidar software manual recommends not changing this at all, but does say what effect it actually has on underlying permissions.

The result is that all users in the "users" group can now edit all files in shares they have access to.
HOWEVER: if a user in the remote creates a folder, users in the users group cant see it and get access denied in Windows.

What I want to happen is to give access at group level to one of more shares, and allow users from both groups to update, create and delete within that share irrespective of their group. The 2 users in teh remote group only see 1 share each, but when inhouse can log in with their alternative username and see/update everything.

The settings below are what I reckon should work but don't.

ReadyNAS Share settings:
Then I have a number of shares, to which all users have access via the "users" group, each setup as follows:
Default access: disabled (this prevents access unless a valid user/password is provided).

Share Access Restrictions: right enabled users ticked, write enabled users "users". All other settings unticked.
Share display option: unticked
Recycle bin: unticked

Advanced CIFS Permission:
Automatically set permissions on new files and folders: ticked (still not sure about this)
Do not allow ACL changes to be more restrictive than this: ticked (to prevent Windows adding further restrictions)
New files created, file permissions: Group rights Read/Write, Everyone rights:Read/Write (This should allow all in the group to read/write to files and folders) - this I believe does not work as it should
New folders created, folder permissions: Group rights Read/Write, Everyone rights:Read/Write

Advanced Options Tab
Share folder owner: test
Share folder group: nogroup (Changed to the specific "users" group name).
Share folder owner rights: Read/write (greyed out)
Share folder group rights: Read/write
Share folder everyone rights: Read/write
Grant rename and delete: ticked.

Your settings look correct. When Len creates a new file, what is the group ownership of the file? What are the group and everyone permissions?
  • ewok: when user Len creates a new file in the share, using Windows7 (or XP)

With the Share Folder Owner set to "users" in advanced Options file permissions in Windows look like this:
    Group or user names:
    Everyone
    users (Unix Group\users)
    Len (RNAS1\Len)

With the Share Folder Owner set to "nogroup" in advanced Options file permissions in Windows it used to look like:
    Group or user names:
    Everyone
    nogroup (Unix Group\nogroup)
    Len (RNAS1\Len)

I then changed the Advanced options from nogroup to users, and back again, but no matter what this is set to I now get the following:

    Group or user names:
    Everyone
    users (Unix Group\users)
    Len (RNAS1\Len)

Also, access to shares seems to be ignoring the settings for users and groups, using a couple of test shares. Perhaps I need to reboot the readyNAS and have another go. It would help to know for sure how it needs to be set.
  • Hello,

You're not alone. I've the same issue with RAIDIator 4.2.19 and 2 users (1 with Win 7, 1 with Win XP). The configuration of rights is exactly the same as yours.

    Regards

What are the actual permissions for the file for Everyone, group, and Len?
