v6.7.1 and this bug fix: Hourly snapshots are taken when disk spin down is enabled
I just noticed this bug fix in 6.7.1:
- Hourly snapshots are taken when disk spin down is enabled
What does it mean: now, even if disks are spinned down/sleep, snapshots will be taken ?
Is there a way to avoid this as it makes spin down useless: If disks are in spin down mode, it means probably no snapshots are needed
Can this feature be enabled: do not wake up disks for hourly snapshots ?
Also, maybe snapshots could be more smart: that is start a snapshot instantly if last snapshot exceeds the specified interval (exp, if daily snapshots and no snapshots were taken since 3 days, do not wait for midnight to take a snapshot)

I don't think that follows. If spin down is set to 5 minutes it is reasonably likely that that they are.
There is no perfect answer here, it depends on the use case I think. Providing an option makes some sense to me.

I agree more can be done. Missed snapshot handling probably is one. Having retention limits on smart snapshots would be useful. More control over timing, especially if the NAS is on a power-down schedule.
There is a balance here- if the logic is too complicated it likely will be buggy, and also hard to understand.
I suggest posting your enhancement thoughts on the idea exchange.

I will do, thanks
Spindown should never be less than one hour in my opinion, to not kill disks too early...

I've never seen real data on that, and there have been folks here who've argued that it doesn't affect bearing life on modern disks.
In any event, I used to set mine to one hour, but changed my approach fairly recently. There are background activities that will spin up the disks, and waiting an hour to spin them down wastes energy. What I do now is I only enable spindown after hours and use the 5 minute threshold.
