OK, I used this very useful tutorial http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/vistaMTU.htm to set the MTU on my Vista wireless laptop to 1492. I then set the NAS MTU back to 1500. Result: wired speed back to normal, wireless is now unusable again. So, setting the MTU on the wireless laptop to 1492 makes no difference. The only thing that seems to work is changing the MTU on the NAS thus halving the wired transfer rate. :(
