Update:
To make sure the hangs in Vista when mtu is on 1500 isn't caused by my wireless Intel 5100 chip I installed a D-Link DWL-G650 card with latest Atheros Vista drivers.
Did the same test over again. Almost freezes when mtu on Readynas is set to 1500.
