rdouven - thank you for the suggestion above. I had not tried those settings yet - just tried them and still having the same problems at 1500 mtu. I'll drop it down to 1430 and 1492 (seems like the two that worked best for me) and try my backups to see if they timeout.
Sorry for the ranting, but I've spent at least 20 hours researching this problem and looking into other NAS solutions - thoroughly frustrated.
I was just saying in my previous post that my Vista laptop backs up at about 22Mbps to my linux server on the same network as the readynas duo, while my vista laptop will not work with good speeds (4k / sec) with the ready nas.
