VN+ V2 device offline, well sort of
Hi y'all. I have a NV+ V2 with 2x 2TB drives (Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001-9YN164, an approved drive) in X-RAID formation that has run for years without problems. Recently, two things happened- I started running out space, and one of the drives started reporting errors. So I put a 4TB WD Red into a spare slot, expecting a true-up and when the 2TB failed I'd just pull it out. Anyways, although the disk was detected, no re-RAIDing happened.
So I put another 4TB WD Red in. Again, nothing really changed. The 2TB failed, I pulled it out. Now, when I logged into the management pages, the dashboard was offline, although I could access the shares (R/W) and stream etc. A few reboots later, eventually the NAS reported that the volume was now 4TB (3.6 actually) but is still showing offline in the management pages and on the front display is reports C: is unprotected.
I can supply some logs for this, pulled before it finally became unresponsive.
As I can't get into the management pages, I don't know if I should pull the other 2TB or what. I've tried a hot-insertion of the old 2TB, which re-Raided and promptly failed again and I've tried putting a spare 1TB in that slot to "flush" its memory of the 2TB, but I'm told the device is too small.
What I can see of the management pages, there are placeholders for parts of the page structure (screen shots available) like BACKUP_BUTTONJOBS_NOLOG and when I try to reboot from the dashboard, I get DEVICE_IN_REBOOT_ERROR in a dialogue headed SHUT_AND_REBOOT. Reboot fails. However I can reboot from the front panel button.
I'm running RAIDiator-arm Version: 5.3.7 (I think- can't confirm the dashboard is unavailable!) and Dashboard 1.0.0.271.
This has been going on for weeks now. Thoughts?
Thanks in advance
Jon

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredDo you have a backup?
You should have replaced the 2TB disk with a new disk rather than filling empty slots. If you purchase another 4TB disk and use that it should work. Though if another disk is failing it could finish it off.
As for the Device Offline error that would be more complex to resolve. - JonskiAspirantYes, I've got a recent backup. But I'm concerned that a disk failure, and two new disk insertions requires a system rebuild. I bought the NAS and put it in X-RAID specifically to not have to worry about such things- it was sold as a plug and play appliance. Disk positions didn't matter. Capacities were mix n match. It was something a non-technical user could manage. I'm technical, my wife is not. I don't want her to have technical headaches just because I've gone under a bus.
What's the process for minimal faffing around during rebuild? Can I pull a disk and use it as seed for the new setup? Do I need to recreate all the shares and permissions? What other considerations? - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredDisk positions do matter to a point. When a disk fails you need to remove it and put the replacement in the same slot. You didn't do that.
Sounds like you don't have a backup from what you've said. - JonskiAspirant

Try reading for comprehension. Seriously? I just told you the opposite.
Is restoring from backup my only option? What if I pull a 4TB and put it in the failed 2TB slot? - StephenBGuru - Experienced User
Putting in a new 4 TB drive in the failed slot will work. (Or putting in a new 2 TB drive).Jonski wrote: What if I pull a 4TB and put it in the failed 2TB slot?
Don't pull a disk out of your array. - JonskiAspirant

Another disk isn't failing.
And I fixed the device offline error. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredAh I skimmed over your mention you had a backup.
Well it is important still to consider the possibility of multiple disks failing, which is one reason why backups are important.
