Thanks for replying.
I'm not sure what you mean by
You had a backup job that was writing to /media/USB_HDD_1 but there is no USB hard disk mounted there.
It is correct that unattended backups may be scheduled but for human reasons the drive may not be connected or the NAS not recognise a backup drive is connected.
Surely in those instances an error occurs indicating the device can not be found?
If you mean a job was running but the backup drive was disconnected before completion that has not occurred unless there was a power outage.
What can I do to recover the space in /root?

Yes, that NAS only has < 80GB data to backup daily. Other backups are larger to other disks.
