WD 4TB drives - compatibility with ReadyNAS214, OS v6.9.5
Greetings, good people! The NAS we are running needs an upgrade, as far as drives are concerned. The plan for the short term is to use two 4TB drives by WD. We are currently running 2TB WDC WD30EF...

There are only three 4TB drives that have already been successfully tested - WD Black WD4003FZEX , Red Pro WD4002FFWX , WD Gold WD4002FYYZ.
You are doing something wrong. There are over sixty 4TB drives on the compability list for the RN214 - thirteen are WD models. The Ultrastar DC 310 is one of them. The particular models of WD Black and WD Red Pro that you identify aren't listed, but they should work.
Personally I recommend Enterprise Class or NAS-purposed disks for ReadyNAS - not desktop drives.

You are absolutely right - what I am doing wrong is the description :)
Let's say I have my mind set only on a WD 4TB. This narrows the search to the same amount as the one in your snipshot. Out of the 13 results, only 5 have a marker for testing. I am leaving out the purple series as I want to purchase high performance drives with 7200 rpm. So, I am left with Black, Red Pro and Gold. Like my initial post says, our supplier offers successors to the drives listed in the compatibility table. I guess I am just looking for assurance that either of the three models offered to us will work on our RN214.

Perhaps others who might be using this particular versions will chime in.

Those five have a marker saying they weren't tested. The mouse-over says they should be compatible based on tests of a different model in the series.

I'm not seeing a Gold model in your list - the Ultrastar drive line replaced the Golds in WD's lineup last summer.
Based on experience here, I'd say that they will all work.
I wouldn't go with the Black myself - they are power-hungry, and likely will run hotter than the other two. And even though Netgear has tested them and found them to work, WD doesn't recommend them for multi-bay enclosures. See the note at the bottom of the first page of the datasheet: https://media.flixcar.com/f360cdn/Western_Digital-2864151574-eng_spec_data_sheet_2879-771434.pdf
IMO, the Red Pro and the Ultrastar are both better choices (and both have 5 year warranties).
