Weird Booting on ReadyNas Ultra4 ... #19536081

Most odd.
I tried to upgrade to fw 4.2.22, and it could not update (said there was a background task). Tried to kill background tasks (Vault / Squeeze etc). And on rebooting, the front panel now just stays on "Booting ..." and never goes any further.

BUT!

* I can see the units shares as logical drives on my network
* I can access the Frontview control panel via the internal IP address (still says using 4.2.21); all green lights on the indicator panel on front page (Volume / Disk / Fan / Temp)
* I can access open ports on the unit (e.g. 9000 for Squeeze)

Despite this, RAIDar (4.34) only partially finds the unit - "File system check - 100%" in the information block; Blue indicator solid (not blinking) at far left; Browse and Setup buttons disabled. Locate and Rescan enabled and working.

I need to expand the drives (4 new 2TB drives arrived today; was planning to incrementally swap the old ones out).

Presumably doing it now would be a BAD idea. But I have powered down (via the front power button for 5 seconds) and rebooted several times with the same outcome.

Advice please on what I should be doing?!

Cheers
Tom

  • Further update:
    * ports no longer working (internal ip:xxxx from a browser)
    * can still access internal_ip/shares
    * all drives seem fine from FrontView - SMART+ suggests no errors.
    * have succesfully reverted to FW 4.2.19 (or so it says on Frontview, as well as email alerts), but still won't get past booting...
    * can still shut down and reboot via Frontview...

    LATER UPDATE. WEIRDER AND WEIRDER
Following on from a suggestion elsewhere, booted without the network cable plugged in. After booting, got "no network link", plugged ethernet cable back in, and all fine....
WTF??! (This worries me - what causes it to mis-boot like that?)
