What is the benefit of upgrading ram on NV+

I found a compatible 1GB memory module in a 7 year old HP laptop. I put it in the NV+, ran the memory tests, and since I only use it as a file server, I noticed absolutely no perceptible improvement. When I needed the laptop again, I put the original 256MB module back in and it is till functioning with the original memory.
