The speed wirelessly copying to the NAS sounds about right for Wireless G (which is what your router has). The speed copying from the NAS and the copy failing is poor. Have a read of ReadyNAS Performance Expectations
Does your laptop support wireless N? If so I'd suggest getting a new router which supports this. A wireless N router would give better range and also at same distance from new router as from old one should give better performance.
