Why are my NAS's disks spinning up after ~2 1/2 hrs sleep?

Since I'm new to this I'm unsure if you could temporarily replace the old noflushd?
If you could find a newer version from a matching platform, renaming the old to .org and inject the new should not cause any unrepairable damage?
Worst thing would probably be a kernel panic requiring you to single user mode boot* the box and restore the original version?
*) serial/console cable + keyboard required???
