Win 2k12 backup to ReadyNAS314*SOLVED*

Hi guys,

We set up a new company Win 2k12 server. Our intention is to back up files to a share on the ReadyNAS 314. The built in Windows backup operation fails.

Message: The backup failed to complete. There was a failure preparing the backup image of one of the volumes in the backup set. Detailed error: Incorrect function.

Windows backup doesn't see the mapped drive, so you have to \\xxNAS1\ to it in the backup scheme.

We have all of the permissions set correctly in the NAS.

We can backup locally from C: to D: and vice versa, so its not the backup app in and of itself.

We can backup to another older NAS (a Buffalo terrastation) just fine.

I'm surprised this issue exists, as presumably many people seek to back up their Windows 2012 server to a ReadyNAS 314 using the built in software.

I'm also going to call support and share their response here if they can fix it.

I greatly appreciate your help.

Rich

  • I have called support:

First rep tried and we couldn't get it to work. Being escalated. Given that its Win2k12, and a simple backup across a network that doesn't work, I trust they'll have this fixed soon.
  • Over 24 hours. No call back or email from Netgear just yet. Again guys, this is a simple Windows 2012 backup to NAS issue. I'm surprised this isn't well documented.
  • Fixed -

Here's the email from Netgear with their input:

    Update from NETGEAR:
    Hi Rich,

This is Brian from NETGEAR Business Support and I am responding in behalf of Leah.

We would like you to download/install the NETGEAR SMB Plus add-on found on this website http://apps.readynas.com/pages/?page_id=9, then continue with the instructions below.

    1. Once the add-on is installed in the ReadyNAS, access the SMB Plus add-on and set the drop-down button to SMB 2.0 - Windows Vista / 2008 and click Save.

    2. Go back to the main NAS interface and under System > Settings, disable and re-enable the SMB service to restart Samba.

    Kind regards,

We followed these steps and it still didn't work, restarted everything after the changes and it worked. The sticking point was SMB higher than 2.0 is NOT COMPATIBLE WITH THE WINDOWS BACKUP SERVICE IN SERVER 2012.

    Thanks Netgear/Brian.
