Window shares set up and WD TV Live
Hello guys.
I've had my readyNAS duo v1 for a few years now and I just recently bought a WD TV Live box for my TV. Now, I have a bit of a problem as the TV box can't see my readyNAS in window shares. It shows up just fine when I search for it as a mediaserver, but if I want to play ISO files it has to be viewed through window shares and it just keeps searching for that. :-(
I read that I might have to set up the share acces, but I must admit that I havn't got a clue as to how to do this. So, can anyone help me out on how to set this up so I can see the NAS via window shares??
I've got the box hooked up to a switch that is connected to the router and the NAS is connected to the router as well. I tried moving the NAS so the box and NAS was connected to the same switch, but that didn't help.
Any kind of help is much appriciated. :-)
Regards Jakob.

- xeltrosApprenticeDoes your NAS work from a PC / mac ? You can browse you iso from there ?
I've only seen devices such as wd TV using DLNA, do you have an option to use windows shares on it ? I didn't know that the WD TV read iso.
What media server are you using ?
Your network setup is good, no worry about that, if the NAS is seen in DLNA by the WD TV then this is good. - LurifaxAspirantYes I can browse the folders from my PC and the kind people of WD forum told me that WDTV can indeed read ISO but only when it is using windows or linux shares.
I used to use my PC as a player with HDMI cable, but got tired of the hassle with a computer that had to be on and long cables etc etc. :-)
I'm sorry but I dont quite know what you mean by what media server I am using? English is not my native language so I miss a few things from time to time. ;-) - xeltrosApprenticeI myself am french. My English is not bad but trust me when I say that 10 years without practicing spanish just killed it and that a few weeks is not enough to learn russian and polski ;) So I totally understand, as will everyone here. Particularly because your English is quite good, not perfect (mine is not either) but easy to understand, so don't worry.
It shows up just fine when I search for it as a mediaserver
You used the word yourself, usually a media server designate something that streams media contents over the network, like a DLNA server or an itunes server.
Can you post (or link) what was said exactly by WD guys ? it will probably help to narrow down the problem. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserI have a WDTV Live (though I don't use it much). If you can access the NAS already from a PC, then this should be very easy to set up.
When you select "media server" from its UI it is using DLNA. That does have limitations, including the ability to read ISO files.
If you go push the down arrow on "media server" you navigate to "network shares". When you click "enter", you should then see a list of servers (as usual to the right of the "network shares" icon).
Scroll to the NAS, and click on it. You should then go to a password screen, where you can enter the username/password you need (for instance admin and the NAS admin password). The default "anonymous" works if your NAS is set up to allow anonymous access.
Then you browse the shares on the NAS, and you can navigate and play DVD ISOs. Mine won't play BluRay ISOs - not sure if newer versions will, but I suspect not.
-If nothing happens when you press "network shares", then power down the unit, and then power up again. It discovers the NAS, and while that is pretty fast, its not 100% reliable.
-The WDTV will remember the login name for the device as long as it remains powered.
-If you scroll down into "settings" you will find a screen where you can set the workgroup name, and set up an automatic login to a specific network share. - LurifaxAspirant

Thanks for that Xeltros. :-) He wrote "How are you trying to play your files, a DNLA Media Server or Windows Shares? ISO's will only play using windows or linux shares."StephenB wrote: When you select "media server" from its UI it is using DLNA. That does have limitations, including the ability to read ISO files.

That's the problem. It just keeps searching when I click enter on network shares and never gets past the spinning disc. I've looked in the share tab in NAS frontend, and as far I can tell, anonymous acces is allowed but I'm not that comfortable when I start to change things that deep into the setup so I'm hesitant to do trial and error. :-)
Edit: It's a DLNA server as far as I know. :-) - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserIf you aren't seeing the list of servers, then there might be some other device on the network that is confusing the player. If there's only one share with the media, then try the setting to automatically log in to a specific share.
If you are getting past that, try using the admin as the user name, and the NAS admin password - that should have access. - xeltrosApprenticeMaybe accessing the NAS just before from a PC to make disk spin up and be sure that the NAS is up and running before trying to access it with the WD TV ?
Did you update your WD TV and your NAS to the latest version ?
You should have a backup of all important data anyway. I this backup is done via another NAS maybe you can try ? otherwise you could try to share an ISO via a share on your windows machine to see if this works. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserDisk spindown can create problems with some players - though I'm not sure on this particular symptom.
Another thought is to configure the WDTV to use "list view" - another system setting. Cover art and thumbnail processing might not be working well for some reason. - LurifaxAspirantOk, i just checked again with this PC on and when I select network shares I can see this PC and my wife's PC but no NAS.
I can see that the WDTV is set up with workgroup "WORKGROUP" and the NAS has the workgroup "VOLUME"?
I just changed it and now I can see the NAS. I'll go find the right password and be right back to tell you if this worked. :-) - LurifaxAspirantAlright it worked. I can now acces the NAS via window shares and actually play ISO files. They lag immensively but at least I'm connected to the NAS now. :-)
