Windows 8 Credential Question Using Microsoft Account

I have a NV+v1 which runs in a home environment, we have six different users in the house, all of which use Windows 8 computers as primary, either desktops or laptop, some, like me and my wife, use both; in addition their Windows computers, the kids also have their iPads and iPhones. NV+ is set to User Security Mode. I have entered each of our six Window user names and passwords and then given each respective user access to certain shares, either read only, read/write or no access. For example the kids have read/write to the Music share but only read to the Picture share, as they would no doubt delete the embarrassing photos we plan to use as some future date, perhaps their wedding. The kids also use their Home Share to store their personal content and as a place to back up their laptops. This is how our setup has been since the beginning and has worked great, especially as the kids have grown and their computer/content needs have grown too.

Yesterday I decided to upgrade the Windows computers to 8.1, a process that went very smooth. At the same time, I decided to migrate my wife and I from a Windows local account to a Microsoft account as we both have more than one device running windows (desktop, laptop, tablet) and there are favorable advantages to using a Microsoft account across multiple computers. Here is where I ran into a problem. While the Microsoft account change went flawless on all devices, and they synchronized perfectly, the NV+ on the home network no longer recognized us.

Here is an example (fictitious name and password) of my setup:

The local Microsoft account that worked all these years: Username: JD Password: abc123 (this is also what I have entered in the NV+)

The Microsoft Account I just migrated over to: Username: J.Doe@outlook.com Password: abc123, when logged into Windows, shows user name of John Doe.

My question is, what username and password does the Microsoft account send to the NV+? It is clearly not the local account credentials as they no longer work. After searching the forum, I tried a few iterations on the NV+, such as: Username: john.doe Password: abc123 and Username: john_doe Password: 123abc none worked. What did work is going into Windows Credential Manager and adding a Windows credential for the NV+ with Username JD and password 123abc. Now everything works as before on my devices when I login with my Microsoft account instead of my local account. However, I would prefer not to have to use this workaround and, as before, simply enter the proper username and password into my NV+ that the Microsoft account is sending to the NV+. I still have to make similar changes to my wife’s devices and one of the kid’s, but I am waiting until I have a better understanding of this change in credentials under the user security mode.

Thanks for your help!

The windows system presents the full login name to the NAS. I think your workaround is what is needed.

Why are you concerned about it?
  • Thank you StephenB for the response. Your questions is a good one and caused me to stop and think, especially now that I have had a day or so away from the issue. I guess somewhere in my mind, and limited skill with this, it seemed simpler and more straightforward to have the Windows login match the NV+ user name and password, similar to how we have been doing it all these years. Using the Windows Credential Manager was easy and, more importantly, worked; however having to go to each device and create somehow seemed like I was doing it wrong. Especially since my wife and I have three devices each and, we also have a general use desktop computer in a common area, with an extra-large screen, that everyone uses, but they each logon with their own username/account. I suppose I would have to create separate credentials on that computer under each user logon, no?

In the end, it isn’t really all that big of a deal, I think after a while I became more obsessed with figuring out what username and password I needed to enter into the NV+ to work with the Windows Microsoft Account. I also assumed others had experienced this issue and there would be something here in the forum, but I wasn’t able to find. I do appreciate your taking the time to clarify.

So, I have to know, given my example in the first post, what would I type into the NV+ as the user name when using a Microsoft Account?

    Thanks again!
