Windows 8 Image Backup & NV+ Firmware 4.1.12

Hi,

I have recently upgraded a Windows 7 Ultimate (64-bit) computer to Windows 8 Pro (64-bit) and quickly realised there was a problem with Windows 8 image backups failing with error; "The version does not support this version of the file format". Having done some research on forums etc I realise this is relates to an incompatibility with Windows 8 and some implementations of SAMBA and I noticed yesterday that a new firmware 4.1.12 has been released for my NV+ which claims to address the issue.

I have upgraded my NV+ from 4.1.10 to 4.1.12 and retried my Windows 8 image backup, however the same error occurs. Does anyone know if there is additional configuration required within 4.1.12 to resolve this issue, or whether 4.1.12 doesn't resolve the issue in all situations?

Incidentally, my NV+ remote update did not automatically detect the newer version and following a manual update having downloaded the new firmware from the Netgear website it still states; The system is already running the latest firmware (4.1.10), although the home screen reports 4.1.12. Is this correct, or has there been a problem with the upgrade (my NV+ seems to work fine in all other regards)?

Thanks,

Simon

  • Thanks for that - the SMBD change probably explains "improvement" in the consistency of the error messages I'm seeing within Windows.

I agree the wording could be clearer if that's the intent of the note and the reference to "SMB client" makes more sense in that context. I wonder if anyone knows whether there is a version of SAMBA capable of resolving this and is so which version it is? I know the NV+ is an older device, but I wonder if the same problem exists on newer models (especially the latest OS6 devices)? I should imagine that if the latest devices experience the same issue, there isn't a version of SAMBA available which fixes it....

The latest devices running ReadyNAS OS are using samba 4.x
  • I wonder if there's anyone out there who can confirm whether Windows 8 Pro (64-bit) can successfully create an image backup on an OS6 device? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

it seems windows8 can't back system image to NAS by Samba,
if your NAS support iSCSI, you can backup windows 8 'image to iSCSI target on NAS, I tried, it is OK.

The below is some information I searched.

Well, I have to say on Windows 8 it only works for a normal backup and NOT the system image backup.

I think people need to start writing Microsoft and asking for this feature to be installed again on Windows 8 for NAS backups.

You can view from Microsoft here:

    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/wind ... 6a9?page=3

Here's a brief description of what users have found:

There are two different things going on here:

For Win 7 and win 8 when u get the error that applies to a specific file or parse point not being backed up it usually means some file is in quarntine by a virus program and therefore can not be read. There are various possible solutions most center around deleting everything from quarantine. Before you do the back up.

For Win 8 only: The Win 7 back up program included with win 8 does not support backing up a image file to any kind of NAS device (UNIX, Linux) . Internally the program gives an error that the NAS device has an incompatible sector mapping type. You can backup to a hard drive that is attached to a different windows machine and then back up that file to your NAS. Convoluted, but it works. Should MS fix this? Probably yes but their current philosophy seems to be that people should be using win 8 backup (Files within Libraries only) I hate the whole concept of Libraries, (and Play Lists) They make no G D sense to me. But that's just me.

Another solution is a 3rd party system backup (which thankfully I have and it came with the NAS from Western Digital).
  • Thanks for confirming the error also exists on the OS6 devices Evan. That suggests there isn't a version of SAMBA available which fixes the issue as I believe OS6 includes the latest version of SAMBA 4.

I was also getting the '0x807800C5' (There was a failure in preparing the backup image of one of the volumes in the backup set.) error intermittently before I upgraded my NAS to 4.1.12. Now I get 'The version does not support this version of the file format. (0xC03A0005).' every time.

I've just had a dig around with the "File History" backup in Win8 - I hadn't even looked at it before and it seems totally alien to me - I like to see what I'm backing up and not have someone else decide!!!

I suppose the lack of image restore from Microsoft fits with the idea of using a Microsoft account to login to Windows instead of a set of local credentials so all your local configuration ports from machine to machine and "resetting" Windows more like a mobile OS. Definitely too consumer-centric!
