Yes, I'm using DHCP throughout, and my switch is indeed "dumb" (unmanaged). Based on your reply I tried something: I renewed ALL DHCP addresses (using IPCONFIG), and I turned JUMBO frames OFF. Indeed the problem went away (for now).
I think I may well buy a fully managed switch with it's OWN DHCP server (I guess that's then a "router" no longer a simple switch). Thanks for the reply - it helped a LOT!
