Xymon/Hobbit on ReadyNAS (Duo)

I have been doing some research into whether this is feasible. I found some old (dead) posts about installing the Hobbit client on ReadyNAS, however, I am mulling over whether the ReadyNAS could be used as the Xymon server using the inbuilt webserver to show stats and availability from my various network connected equipment.

So far, I understand that Xymon can be installed on Linux, it needs to be compiled with a number of development libraries (PCRE, RRD, OpenSSL, OpenLDAP etc), I'm thinking this should be possible on the ReadyNAS, in the real world I'm not sure. Failing this i'd set up a spare pc/laptop as the Xymon server but would love to have the NAS doing the work as it is always switched on.

Any suggestions, ideas and advice most welcome, thanks.

  • For anyone who is interesting in this, after a bit of tinkering I got it working.... Its a great little addition to the ReadyNAS, quietly monitoring all of the attached devices and showing their status in a graphical view. The Xymon service is monitoring connectivity for all of my home network equipment (Desktop, Laptops, Android, iPod, Routers, DVR, Soundbridge - even the TV). Havent set up alerting yet but the graphs show the availability of each of the devices for any period. Ideal if you want to check/monitor your internet availability or memory/disk/cpu usage on clients - or just want to see which of your devices were connected at any one time - e.g. Wifi laptops, ipod, smartphones...
