Hide the IoT network

It make zero sense to me that Netgear would offer to separate out an IoT network to put all of ones smart home devices on and then advertise the IoT network to all by not hiding it.

My crappy cable modem can hide networks.

It seems to me a network no-one knows is there might be more secure.

Seriously think that a hidden SSID (or a MAC access control list) does add any more security than just security by obscurity? A so called "hidden" SSID is just invisible to the average user. The hidden SSID is there, will answer (with its complete name), even borrowing a MAC address (physical or randomized) from another active WiFi client yon your "secured" network is a question of a few seconds. I know about every "hidden" network in the neighborhood here, regardless. Amazing this idea does not go out of people mind since WiFi and 802.3 was introduced in 1997 - apparently it still holds into late 2023.

    Hello@owenrobles

Moving your important devices on a separate network would really be a good practice in putting extra layer of protection other than just hiding your SSID from guests. We are sorry if our advice may not sound secure to you but we would like to remind you that at the end of the day It will always be your discretion how you wish to secure your network.

    Dear ErwinL

We don't really know for sure which Netgear device supporting an IoT network the OP is talking of here. As this was posted on the Idea Exchange for Business, one could assume it might be an AX6000 Tri-Band Orbi Pro WiFi 6 Mesh-System which does certainly allow a complete segregation for example of the IoT network as you are suggesting.

This does not change anything about the fact that hiding WiFi SSIDs is pure security by obscurity, not adding -any- security as commonly know nowadays.

    Regards,

    -Kurt
