Add IOT SSID on RBR850

Dear Netgear

I have spent a good wallup of money on a RBR/RBS850 setup, expecting to be well equiped for our WIFI- and LAN networking needs in this day an age... Apparently I couldn't have been more wrong!?!

To my supprise this system doesn't allow for 2.4GHz seperation of SSID's - litterally disabeling all but the very latest IOT devices found in homes everywhere.

Netgear, how can you NOT have fixed this issue on the RBR850 yet??

This issue comes up here with monotonous regularity.

Few Mesh systems allow separate SSIDs. It simply is not needed except to make up for badly written IoT apps. Even then there are ways to achieve the required effect without breaking the Mesh technology.

Not having separate SSIDs will not disable any IoT device. A 2.4 GHz device cannot see 5 GHz and will connect to the router's 2.4 GHz wifi.

You just have it work out how to make it work, And that is down to whoever made the IoT thing.

  • Thanks for the reply 🙂

    a couple of observations...

1 - My old SRR60 had no trouble seperating the two...

2 - the reason for the lacking support for 5GHz isn't the apps, but rather the chosen chips in the IOT device. If I was to produce a smart lightbulb with a needed wifi speed of next to nothing, I would also choose the 2.4GHz chip costing a fraction of the 5GHz, and resulting in a superior wifi coverage.

3 - I have a lightbulb bridge and a vacuum cleaner - and both are having issues due to the fact that I cannot seperate the 2.4GHz band, according to the respective technical support teams...

4 - It seems Netgear have picked up on the need for a iot SSid - at least it is available on the 960

    Suggestion:

How hard would it be to let the user choose between:

1 - using the guest SSID as a guest SSID, or

2 - using the guest SSID as a IOT SSID running only on 2.4GHz

  • ... or better yet.

Just set it up, exactly as it is described in the manual...

Its not a issue as NG never intended or supported having separation of SSIDs on ANY Orbi system.

However, be patient, new things are on the horizon.

  • YES!?!

FURRYe38 -can you confirm that a solution might be underway?!?? - and if so what is the timeframe (weeks-months years....?)

You just made my day 🙂  - THX
