Although automatic firmware updates should probably be the default, there should be a method (easily accessible in the firmware settings) to disable firmware auto-updates.
The foregoing would allow those experiencing issues with the latest firmware to remain on an earlier version.

Totally agree. I'm not aware of any other company forcing its updates on a customer.

- Agree. Should be option to disable/enable automatic update in the GUI as well as an indication of which alternative was selected.

This should not even be a discussion. If there is EVER a possibility of firmware disabling or breaking a network completely, then the answer is that consumers should have the right to manually update or turn off auto updates. I have had to manually downgrade this firmware that BREAKS all my wired connections behind my switch now 3 times, and takes no less than an hour each time. We work from home sometimes, and our smart home is run by these connections, so this shouldn't even be a discussion. I feel if you ever push out a firmware that breaks your system then you are liable for a refund and damages that occur as a result.

Manual update must be allowed as an option, because Reliabilty matters. Here are two compelling reasons:
1. Network can be disabled when out of town. Impact: Family in an uproar with no one able to diagnose and resolve the problem, also no access to smart home devices or IP Security Cameras.
2. Wake up to a network that is down. Impact: Spend a good part of your day off locating and fixing the problem.
All downtime creates customer ill will and tarnishes the Netgear brand.
Knowing that an update is available and installing it manually, or at least clicking on auto-update, allows the process to be monitored and problems resolved immediately, not as a suprise with big and possibly long term consequences.
- My Asus allows me to opt in on beta firmware.. That should be an option, too. We'd get more quality control that way.
