Although automatic firmware updates should probably be the default, there should be a method (easily accessible in the firmware settings) to disable firmware auto-updates.
The foregoing would allow those experiencing issues with the latest firmware to remain on an earlier version.

Please speak with your ReadyNAS colleagues about what a possible solution can be for stopping auto updates of the FW. Auto checking for new FW is ok when accessing the admin client, but then the final choice to upgrade - or not - lies with the admin.

Absolutely, right away, and easily found too, not buried 3-tiers-deep in advanced or debug screen.
netgear- you guys are human, there are releases that break things for your users. If you play god and force updates that break things, then every lost minute, every lost $ for users really is YOUR responsibility, and that will outweigh the many good things that you do.
How about an option of a three tiered system:
1) Manual Update only.
2) Auto-update to "safe" stable releases that have been in general (not Beta) release for a month or more without major issues.
3) Auto update to latest general release.
Model specific firmware-update notices should be sent to users that CLEARLY state (at intelligent, but not IT tech level) what specific feature upgrades, bugfixes, and security patches are handled by the update. If they are on Manual or Safe-auto updates, then the user can decide if there is some need to update immediately. And Auto-general update users can be on notice that an update will be rolled-out and able to look for problems or take advantage of features.

I agree this should be a feature immedately, especially in light of all the problems updates have caused recently. My system is working fine at the moment and I'd rather it be left alone. Prevrious updates have worked for me in the end but I've woke up with the need to power cycle everything manually after an update. I'd rather handle them myself on my own time. It would also be great to have a feature where we are emailed when new firmware is available.
Add my vote - should be a no brainer
Agree, please implement this option/feature. I like to keep my stable firmware. Also, wonder if Netgear would replace a router if the auto-update brick it.

My orbi is 3600km away from me. Use it to controll heat, light and alarm. After autoupdate i december I have no connection to my summerhouse. Need to fly dwon there next week to update firmware manually..uugh
I totally agree - I never signed up to be a beta tester for Netgear, and that is essentially what this feature does. Anything later than 2.0.0.74 causes significant wifi issues for me - I have manually "updated" back to 2.0.0.74 at least 10 times. Tried all the "edit NVRAM" settings and other methods to block auto-update - nothing works to stop this auto-update. Eventually I will wake up to 2.1.2.18 and shortly after that all wireless-connected devices d/l speeds drop from 200+ Mbps to <30 Mbps. Timeouts, dropped packets, you name it. WIRED devices on router or either of two Satellites maintain excellent speeds so not a backhaul issue.
It is unconscionable that there is no opt-out option for firmware updates at this point.

I agree that easily allowing users to disable automatic updates should be an option.
