Coaxial cable connect to modem

I am trying to insert the coaxial cable into my modem, but it will not screw on. The modem has a flat top on the cable input which seems to be an issue. I can connect the other end to the wall outlet. I know this sounds like a dumb issue but it not making any sense to me how this fits. I have of course made sure the inner cable is inserted first but no luck. Is there a new coaxial cable that is supposed to fit this? It fits just fine with my previous arris model.

A removable, protective plastic cap?  Pull it off?

Otherwise, a picture might be more helpful than your description.

Nothing on it. It looks like someone shaved down a circle and it is completely flat on top. Ended up getting it to work, albeit much harder. Had to push it as hard as I could while I turned the cable. Why anyone would do this is beyond me.

Please provide a picture. It is hard to know the issue without it.

Same problem here. Coaxial cable connection is flat on the top and will not screw.

           How can you tell?

It's a consensus.  Without being able to see the thing, these
        descriptions are inadequate.
