How long do modem routers last
Hello - I am wondering how long a typical Modem/Router lasts. I currently have the N600 WiFi Cable Modem Router C3700 model that I bought almost 6 years ago. It is working fine but I will be moving to a new, larger (3 story) home and I am not sure if I should start over with a new modem/router or continue to use this one. What is the lifespan of these?
Are there updates online that periodically need to be done with these router/modems?
Will this router type be suitable for a 3 story home? It says "large" home on the box.
If it is recommended I upgrade to something new - what is a comparable newer product that I should get? I don't do any gaming or streaming, basically use the internet for Netflix and browsing.
Thanks

Re: How long do modem routers last
If taken care of and configured well, seems like they last a while.
You can take the modem/router to your new place and connect it up. If your using the same ISP. If the ISP is different, contact them first to see if they support what you have been using.
If you feel the modem/router don't work well at the new place, you have a couple of options.
1. Bridge the modem/router and use it as a modem. Then connect a external router to the modem for better wifi and router handling abilities. Any WiFi router will work in this configuration.
2. Use the modem in router mode, disable the modems wifi radios and connet up a wireless router in AP mode. Used the wifi router in AP for your new wifi operation. Youl could connect a NG Orbi wifi MESH system in AP mode for great coverage if you have a larger home. Or any other standard non MESH wifi router will or in AP mode as well.

Re: How long do modem routers last
Basically a lot depends on your cable service.
Reason I say that is you can always turn the C3700 into a modem only and disable its router features. Then you can add a better router or mesh system to cover your home for better coverage speed.
Plus so if the C3700 meets the speeds you're paying for, it should work since you can always add a router to it for better coverage.
Plus I'd recommend a modem seperate from a router anyway. It allows you to control the firmware on the router and if one device goes bad, you're not having to replace a more expensive unit. a little more on the buy in to have to buy a modem and a router.
