uTorrent on RN312

Hi everyone,

I'm pulling my hair out trying to get uTorrent to run correctly on my RN312 (latest firmware).

I've got SP's latest version installed (from the community dropbox), but I none of my edits to the directory settings (through the web gui) save. I press "save", go back into the settings and nothing is there!

I'm also not seeing uTorrent's main folder in my 'data' folder - to edit the settings manually, can this only be accessed via SSH??

Also is there a permissions setting I need to setup for uTorrent to accept the changes to it settings?

Any help would be much appreciated - been trying to figure this out for hours now..!!!!

Thanks :)

  • Have you tried to uninstall then re-install the uTorrent App in your NAS?
Have you tried to consider using the Torrent Apps that are official to the ReadyNAS OS 6 units from this link: http://apps.readynas.com/pages/?page_id=9 ?
What is the current FW version on your NAS?
  • Same exact thing happens to me and the official ReadyNAS torrent software is very outdated and mostly non-functional as far as torrenting goes.

Readynas 316 here and firmware 6.2.4

I even asked on the qtorrent forum and they stated that the version packaged which is 2.9.8 is outdated and no longer supported and contains many bugs. There's a thread around talking about a recent build of utorrent but you check the community drop box and to me that looks like something compiled over a year ago so I don't think that's the recent build that's being talked about. It did install version 3.0 but when I try running it I get an exception error "Application failed to initialize" 22002010000

Just to be clear on this - There is no official ReadyNAS torrent software. Like most of the apps, they were created by members of the community, and not by Netgear. They are distributed by Netgear, but Netgear didn't create them and doesn't support them.

In my opinion, it would be good if more folks here developed/maintained these apps. Perhaps an open-source companion site for them would make that easier.
  • Yeah I should have put "official" mine was a comment to Ixa.

I at least got farther into it now, but I'm in the same boat as the OP I can't find the folders this is even downloading to and trying to add a folder in the settings doesn't work. It just clears that data right back out.
  • So it is downloading, but no idea where to. It'll download a file seed it, and I can even transfer it to other devices, but whatever directory it's downloading to seems to be entirely hidden.
  • Hey all,

I solved it finally!! I believe it was a permissions issue.

This is how I fixed it:

    1. SSH'd to the application folder via terminal. Make sure you use 'root' (not 'admin') - the password is the same one used for admin.
    2. Naviagate to the 'apps' folder to find the utorrent folder (this is also the place where your downloads are probably ending up btw, look in 'utorrent' > 'bin' folder)
    3. chmod the utorrent folder (and contents) to 755

That should allow you to go back into the web GUI of utorrent, and change the settings there and have them save. Well it worked for me anyway - all seems to be going good for me!

    Good luck! :D
  • This did not work for me, the folder was already at 755 as well as the config.xml I found the torrents I downloaded in the bin folder like you said, but still have no way to access them and the settings will not change. I can't save the files to any particular folder they just all get downloaded to bin, which I can only access via SSH.
  • Hi,

Only thing I can think of -
    1. Make sure utorrent is not running when you're making your changes (turn the service off in "Frontview" first)
    2. Go a bit extreme, chmod the folder to 777 (be sure to do so recursively, '-R'), not sure if this is such a great idea. But might be what you need to at least change your settings via utorrent's GUI.
