Any Entry level Voice Vlan capable switch for home lab?
Hello there,
im looking for an affordable Voice Vlan capable managed switch
i currently have the GS308E thats its Vlan capable but as i continue to learn i find out voice vlan is a different feature that this switch do not have,
any suggestions?
im working on a small home lab setup with polycom phones and want the phone to grab automatically the voice vlan but my switch do not have that feature.

Hi CornellRPG,
You would need at least a Smart switch, the GS308T comes with the same number of ports than the GS308E and it includes features like Auto-Voice VLAN and Voice VLAN.
You can find the datasheet on the link below for all the specificications:

Before evaluating and going out for shopping: Do you have a network environment - read: a router supporting multiple VLANs and IP subnetworks - for this project? There is no technology magic in a switch supporting voice VLAN. All it can do is automatically assign a VLAN ID eg. based on the MAC (of the phone), probably some more or less useful priority bits.
Said this: What your phone requires is a port with a tagged VLAN for the voice traffic and IP subnet, and typically one untagged for the normal network (Internet/LAN) subnet. The fanciest managed switch wont help on the essential requirements here.
- CornellRPGAspiranti do have a mikrotik router in place so all vlan setup is up and running.
only thing i noticed its not working is the voice vlan to use lldp on my voip phone since the switch do not support that feature.
- CornellRPGAspirantyou are right.
seems like this will work.
i was thinking since im going to spend some money and keep learning networking. what kind of business level switch do you recomend to me that have all normal feature for a business switch that will be cheap?
again this is for home lab. so i dont want to expend alot on something just for learning.
even an old one 10/100 with all more than basic features so i can learn more without break the bank? thanks in advance
