What traffic prioritization options exist for the new Multi-Gig switches?

Smart Managed Plus switches offer 802.1p/DSCP-based priority: it uses a field in the data packet header that identifies the class of data in the packet (for example, voice or video).

 

In addition to that, Smart Managed Pro switches QoS feature contains Differentiated Services (DiffServ) support that allows traffic to be classified into streams and given certain QoS treatment in accordance with defined per-hop behaviors. You can define the following categories and their criteria:
1. Class. Create classes and define class criteria.
2. Policy. Create policies, associate classes with policies, and define policy statements.
3. Service. Add a policy to an inbound interface.

With DiffServ, you can filter certain type of traffic based on protocol, service type, source or destination MAC, IP or TCP/UDP port, and enforce policies including shaping with committed rate and burst size.

 

In addition to that, Fully Managed switches (Multi-Gigabit Ethernet is called M4200 series) offer advanced ACL implementation (access control lists). With ACLs, traffic shaping, rate limiting and committed rates / burst sizes can be implemented without DiffServ, directly at a VLAN level, or physical interface level. You can consult this post in order to have an example of an ACL when it comes to limit bandwidth.
