How to install widle in Readynas

Hello everyone.

I would like to install Wdidle on a Readynas Pro running OS 4.2.31.
I have run the following link, but when installing libc6-dev, I get the following error. 'Couldn't find package libc6-dev'
If anyone knows a solution, please let me know.

I am wondering why.  Are you seeing high load cycle counts in your smart stats?

What drives are you using?

Re: How to install widle in Readynas

Mr. StephenB.

The reason is that I want to use Readynas to unlock IntelliPark, which I have been unlocking every single time on my Windows PC.
It was very difficult.

I have always been interested in doing this, but did not want to do it in an environment with critical data.
There is no critical data in ReadynasPro yet, so I thought now was the time to do it.

I know there is some debate as to whether IntelliPark should be deactivated, but from the various opinions on the internet, I think it should be done.
I have deactivated IntelliPark on multiple units and have never had a problem.

I am only saying that it is not a problem in my usage, though.

Put me in the "don't bother" camp. It used to be an issue for Linux systems, because the timeout was set too low.  WD addressed that a long time ago. It's not needed with any currently sold WD disk.  I have quite a few, and none purchased after 2012 have high load cycle counts (which was the concern that prompted people to disable it).

FWIW, I personally don't think it was ever actually needed.  I still have an NV+ ReadyNAS purchased in 2010 that still has its original WD20EARS disks.  I didn't reset the timer - the disks all have over 800,000 load cycle counts, and are still working fine.

Your "how to" link was posted in back in 2011.

The Linux distribution used by all ReadyNAS systems is outdated - 4.2.x firmware is based on Debian 4 ("Etch"), OS 6 systems are based on Debian 8 ("Jessie").  Current production release of Debian is Debian 12 ("Bookworm"). Both Etch and Jessie have been archived by the Debian community, so you'd need to make changes to the source list for apt in order to install any packages.

I haven't run 4.2.31 firmware for quite a while now (my Pro 6 has been converted to OS-6).  So I have no way to test the needed changes for apt for 4.2.x.

One path forward would be for you to convert your Pro to OS-6, and then use the instructions here on how to adjust the apt setup for "Jessie".

Another path would be to continue to use a PC (perhaps using a linux boot drive with a current linux distribution).

Re: How to install widle in Readynas

Mr. StephenB.

 Thanks for the reply.

Is 4.2.31 too old for wdidle?

I was hoping to be able to manually DL the file and install it, but if not, I'll give up.

By the way, Intellpark still seems to be set to 8 seconds.
WESTERN DIGITAL WD80EAZZ, which I bought at least 3 months ago, was set to 8 seconds.

wdidle is older than 4.2.31.  The problem is that you need to make changes to the apt configuration on the NAS in order to install it.  That involves removing the debian repositories, and replacing them with the archived versions, and also making some changes to allow apt to install unsigned packages (because the archives either aren't signed, or have expired signatures).

There are similar changes needed for 6.x firmware - instructions for that are posted here in another discussion thread.  But no one has posted them for 4.2.x firmware (and since I am not running it, I have no way to test the changes needed for OS 4).

My recollection (from ~ 10 years ago) was that the 8 second threshold was only an issue for linux systems, and that it did not create excessive load cycles for Windows.  Have you been actually seeing excessive load cycle counts, or are you just worried about the possibility?

I've only purchased NAS-purposed mechanical drives for some years - most of the ones I am using are either WD Red Plus or Seagate Ironwolf.  These are mostly in various ReadyNAS - I've switched to SSDs everywhere else.  I haven't looked into the threshold setting used, because the potential problem (excessive head parking) simply isn't happening.

Load cycle counts are not excessive on any of my WD Red Plus drives - for example, the WD100EFAX drives in my primary NAS have about 40,000 power on hours, (about 4 1/4 years), and have about 10,000 load cycles.  So on average the heads are parking once every four hours.  The parking rate is similar for all my ReadyNAS hard drives - and is certainly not going to create any issues with the disks.
