Sata interface on RN 10400
I am in the market for a new NAS box and I have come accross a cheap RN10400 (sans drives) and I would
like to know what Sata interface this unit is. I have tried unsuccessfully to find the specs but, it doesn't appear
to be anywhere in any document. Please don't tell me that it doesn't matter because it most assuredly does
when video streaming.
It is strange that this information is not forth coming on any of Netgear's products.
Any info reagrding this would be appreciated.

The disk speed is not the bottleneck on the RN104. SATA III disks are backwards compatible with SATA II ports. Anyway we are using a SATA III controller in the RN104.
The 104 is fine for video streaming, but if you want to transcode then you will need to look to a more powerful model in the range.
Please also note that the warranty is for the original purchaser from an authorised reseller.
Large file transfer (and streaming) performance on an RN104 is about 70 MB/s read and 50 MB/s write. The full BluRay data rate is 54 mbits (~7 MB/s). So even an RN104 is 10x faster than needed for video streaming.
Note the rates for streaming are much lower than many people think. The idea that you need SATA-III (or even SATA II) is wrong. USB 2.0 is fast enough for streaming.
However, as mdgm says, the RN104's CPU is not fast enough for on-the-fly transcoding. This often is a nuisance when you are streaming directly to TVs or BluRay players (it comes up less often with dedicated media players). So you likely will be better off with RN200 and above.
On warranty- paid netgear support is also limited to original purchasers from authorized resellers. Given the price point of the RN100 series, it makes sense to just buy new, and pass by used units.
