Netgear genie won't install on mac

Sorry, wasn't sure where to ask this question. I've tried to install netgear genie several times on my macbook. When I try to open up the installer it say the following....
"NETGEAR_Genie_Installer_2.3.1.2.pkg" is damaged and can't be opened. You should eject the disk image. Is this a installer issue or is my computer not letting me install it?

To all who have had trouble running NetgearGenie.app after installation on a Mac. Problem being that Mac OS says that app file is damaged or such.  Support just sent me a solution. Here it is.

Running the NetgearGenie.app after installation on your Mac from a non administrative user fails because the OS apparently doesn't see a read property for the app for the running account.  The fix is to go into the NetgearGenie.app's Mac information window (from Finder, do Get Info for the app) and unlock the info window, then add the user account from which you are running (click on + at bottom of "sharing and permissions" section of the window and then select account name to add to the Netgear.app's sharing and permissions section). It should be "Read only". I don't no why the "everyone" read only permission doesn't work, but adding the running account name allows the Mac OS to open and run NetgearGenie.app. I have done this on both my iMac connected directly to router and my macbook connected via wifi. Both from  nonadministrative accounts. I have not tried running NetgearGenie.app from my administrative account, so may have to specifically add the administrative account name while running from the administrative account.

Hope this helps everyone who has had the same trouble I have had.

  • Nevermind, figured it out right after I posted. It was my mac not allowing the installation.
  • I had the identical problem, and a quick google search revealed that you and me weren't the only two with this issue, a lot of people are having it. And I haven't yet seen a solution posted anywhere else - you said it was your Mac not allowing it somehow, and you fixed it?

To be clear, when I attempt to open the installer package from the disk image, it says:

"NETGEAR_Genie_Installer_2.3.1.2" is damaged and can't be opened. You should eject the disk image.

I tried downloading it from a few different places and always the same result, so it's not just a mistake downloading that created a one time damaged copy of the file on my Mac, the original file is damaged. Or seems to be.

How did you resolve this problem? It's quite ironic, I returned a Linksys router before purchasing this Netgear model because the installer wasn't compatible with the most current version of OS X, Mavericks, and both the included installer on the CD and the one on their website were the same version, and hadn't been updated in over a year. Unfortunately, unlike the Netgear, it was impossible to install and manage without the software. I can get along fine without the Genie, but I'd like to check it out and would love the software for a router I purchase to work, apparently this is asking a lot considering this is two in a row, ha.

Anyway, if you ever look at this forum again and actually see my question, I would really love any info you have on this. And since I'm guessing you're not going to ever see this, if anyone else knows anything about this, I would GREATLY appreciate it. Thanks!
  • I had this same issue and I figured out how to fix it. It is a problem with you Mac not allowing the installation of Apps that aren't downloaded from the App Store. Open up your System Preferences and click on the Security & Privacy icon. In the bottom left corner of the window that pops up you need to click "Click the lock to make changes". Above the lock icon you will see three options for downloading apps. "Allow apps downloaded from:" Make sure you select "Anywhere" then confirm your selection. Close the window and now you should be able install the Netgear Genie software.

Changing the setting in on the Macbook allowed the app to install.  Thanks

  • I just tried to install Genie 2.4.6 on OSX 10.10. After allowing apps from anywhere the installer showed a successful installation. However, the app icon was the no parking sign, the size was 0K bytes, and if I tried to launch the app the error msg stated that the installation was incomplete or damaged. H E L P!!

Probably a blessing is in disguise.. The Genie app (that you would install on a laptop or mac) has been known to cause all kinds of performance / stability issues that can actually impact your router / network. So, if you actually manage to install it at some point, keep this in mind..

        Hi grandifolia,

May I know what version of the NETGEAR Genie are you trying to install? What error message are you getting?

        Regards,
