Fios Gateway Nighthawk setup

I have a Verizon Fios Quantum gateway and currently have a nighthawk r7000 hooked up into it, both in router mode (I know this isn’t ideal). I then have a nighthawk ac1900 range extender connected to the nighthawks network (larger home).

I know this isn’t ideal and I’m upgrading the range extender to a recently purchased x6s mesh extender. Was thinking to turn off the gateway radios and set the nighthawk router to access point mode. Question was whether the x6s mesh extender will connect to the nighthawk if in access point mode as opposed to router mode. Assume yes but thought I’d check. Also, will this preserve dvr and TV guide activity on Fios stbs, if turning off the WiFi radio on the gateway?

Thanks in advance! Have little ones so troubleshooting time is currently limited which is why I’m asking in advance! :)

I actually do this too (with my Orbi instead of an R7000).  It lets me use the OpenVPN feature in the Orbi.

It will still connect when the Nighthawk is in AP mode (and so will your existing extender).

Yes.  You can test all this with your existing equipment, and then upgrade the extender.
