IP flooding PS3 Call of Duty

My son keeps getting "IP flooded" from a PS3 user. This boots him offline. I'm not sure exactly how this process works, but somehow these kids are obtaining our IP address to do it. I'm guessing the firewall on our Netgear router isn't good enough? Does anyone know how I can make it to where this can't happen?

  • Your son is "giving" them the ip address - he can't connect to the game he wants to play without the ip address being known.

It also has nothing to do with the quality of the firewall at your end, even if you were to install a corporate grade unit, the problem would still occur because what they are doing is flooding the "connection" between you and the ISP until all the available bandwidth has been utilized.

Think about it this way - you erect a bigger, stronger gate at the end of your driveway to keep thieves out, but what the thieves are doing is sending packages - junkmail - so fast that the delivery trucks are blocking your driveway and you can't get out.

There are a couple of ways to deal with it - the first is not to connect to those games, the second is to draw it to your ISP's attention and have them take it up with the ISP from which the ip flood is coming.

Most ISPs have terms of use that specifically restrict this type of behavior and the offender can be disconnected and even prosecuted.
