XR1000 ping spikes, poor connection and bufferbloat

I bought an XR1000 and I got a modem from my ISP rather than a router as it should logically be better.(?)

My house has Fiber-Optic wired to the house but the modem is connected with a coax cable and my ping in waveforms bufferbloat test is 17-23 with/without QoS/Congestion Control and the bufferbloat is usually stuck to 15-30+ for download and +5-15 for upload with a load of jitter and an ungodly amount of ping spikes ranging from 15 up to 50's 70's and sometimes 100-200 if not 900.

 

My intention is to kill bufferbloat because I'm suspecting that I'm not in sync with my online play, my bullets don't register, I die too easily to players that aren't anywhere near good, and I'm never allowed the same amount of reaction time as anyone else on the server, primarily tested in CSGO. I'm comparing this experience to my mates house next door on his PC and my own, my old houses in Denmark and the UK all locations but my current one providing decent gameplay. I'm by the way more than great at the game and I hope we could just take my word for it even though anyone would say that.

 

My ISP does not have an own DNS server, they don't supply me with a login and they just suggest that I set my router to grab anything it gets from the modem and call it a day. There's a chance my cables might be screwed, but I figured I'd atleast troubleshoot the router first and ensure it's running properly because my ISP is essentially leaving me out to dry here, I've got the modem and the coax connection to work with unless anyone suggests otherwise, I'd love some scripted sentences from anyone that I could take to my ISP if need be.

 

My logs in the router suggest DoS attacks and I don't really know what to do at this point, I haven't played games in 2 years because it's not fun anymore, that's essentially 2 years of going to work and coming home going frustrated to bed because my hobby doesn't work for me anymore. I appreciate any help in advance, I just hope I'm on the right course to actually be able to play games again.

    What Firmware version is currently loaded?
    What is the Mfr and model# of the Internet Service Providers modem/ONT the NG router is connected too?
    Be sure your using a good quality LAN cable between the modem and router. CAT6 is recommended. 

     

    Are you testing all this with a wired PC? 

    What apps are you using? 


    Please provide screen captures if what your seeing.

      Firmware is the latest, I've factory reset it a few times, but I haven't factory reset it after plugging in the new Modem (opposed to previous router).

       

      I'm not quite sure what you mean with mfr and model number though. Under the modem it says its an ARRIS TM3402.

       

      I've got a cat6 ethernet cable if not cat8, looking to buy new ones once I find good buying options on amazon for the router to modem connection and to my PC.

       

      And yeah, it's a 2 meter lan cable to my PC, should be a 1gb cat6 or cat8 cable.

       

  • You can ignore the DoS attacks, they're just normal connections, the router is a little premature in labelling them an attack. Have you tested whether you get your ping spikes with the PC direct to the modem? That's the first thing to check, if you do you'll need to consult the ISP about that.

      I'm not able to connect to my modem directly with the PC, but I do recall the same issues occuring with my old routers, but I'm running in circles with my ISP trying to figure this out since it seems like they don't care about my connection and getting a new provider looks rather slim.

       

      Does it at all sound correct that I have just slapped my ethernet cable from the router into the modem and called the setup done or is there more to set up? I'm fairly hellbent on getting a technician out here to look at my cables though, we might've identified a damaged cable last time, but it's very vague so far.

       

      I was hoping I could at least have an optimal router set-up to confirm an issue in some way.

        IF this happened with other prior routers then you need to test the ISP service line and ISP modem. 
        The Arris modem isn't quite the best modem out there. 

         

        Have the ISP check the signal and line quality UP to the modem. Be sure the ISP provisions the modem correctly.
        Be sure there are no coax cable line splitters in the between the modem and ISP service box. 
        Be sure your using good quality RG6 coax cable up to the modem. 
        Start with removing any amplifiers, signal attenuators, or splitters from the coax.
        From there check the line for kinks, damage, moisture in the line.
        Check the connectors for improperly made ends, foil touching the copper coax line, loose connections, bad/old/cheap connectors, or corroded connections. Replace them if you do.
        Be sure to power OFF the modem for 1 minute then back ON.

        Have the ISP review and resolve any issues seen on the modems logs and cable status page and any problems seen on there side.  Routers only work as well as the ISP services.
