XR500 and Vigor 130 modem issues

I have been having trouble getting my setup to connect to the internet.
I have: plusnet FTTC connected by ADSL, Vigor 130 modem, Netgear XR 500 router.

I can connect to the internet using the plusnet modem and the XR500 in AP mode but can't use it in router mode (which is why you buy it!). To get round this I tried changing the modem to the Vigor 130 but now cannot connect to the internet at all.

I set the modem up 'out of the box' as advised by Draytek as they stated I didn't need to change any parameters. - connecting my laptop to the modem I can access the internet by setting up a PPPOE in windows.

Unfortunately as soon as I try to introduce the XR500 it won't connect to the internet. I've spoken to Netgear who stated it should connect without PPPOE but we had no joy, we then tried PPPOE and setting up the VLAN group but again no connection to the internet.

I know others have used this set up (it's why I got the VIgor) so wondering if anyone else has any suggestions as I'm a bit stumped. All the posts I've seen are with BT internet but I've tried those steps too and nothing

thanks for any help

  • So just to clarify, in order to get internet you require PPPoE and VLAN is that right? I think it's best to go back to the Plusnet modem and XR500 for now and see if you can get it to work that way, then if you can it should be a case of switching the modems. When you setup PPPoE before did you have it to 'Always Connect'? On VLAN did you edit the basic Internet VLAN rule and change it to the number you need?

      Hi.

So using the plusnet modem and XR500 I can connect to the internet but only by setting the router in 'AP' mode. This then doesn't require any sort of PPPOE or any internet settings. You can't use it in router mode as the Plusnet modem doesn't have a bridge or any way to turn off its routing capabilities and have it as a straight modem.

When I tried with the new modem I set up PPPOEwith the information plusnet gave me. We tried with and without VLAN enabled but no joy. I had it as 'always on' as well. The netgear technician checked that for me and said I should use VLAN.

Netgear seemed to think that the XR500 should be able to connect without changing the PPPOE anyway so we tried both ways

Sounds to me like you should be able to use the XR500 in router mode. You just have to remove all PPPoE related settings from the XR500. When it says "does your internet connection require a login", say no. It should connect as a client of your ISP router no problem.

Once that's done you can put the XR500 into the DMZ of the ISP router and you should be good to go.
