Orbi router ethernet backhaul with both WAN and LAN ports used, is it a good setup?
Hello all,
I setup my satelites using ethernet backhaul and I learnt from the other postings that both of the router's LAN and WAN ports can be used for the following reasons:
1. LAN PORT: In order to enable ethernet backhaul with the satelites, the router's LAN port needs to be connect to the switch (one of the configuration option).
2. WAN PORT: If this port is not used, the router will show magenta LED ring and it won't go off. So I plug in another active ethernet cable from the switch used by the LAN PORT.
With the above router configuration, the router is no longer shown any light (Perfect) and the satalite connection type (as shown on the Orbi router's admin web page) is WIRED (Perfect).
Is the above router configuration a correct setup?
Would the Orbi router's life become shortened with this configuration?
How come the WAN and LAN ports did not get seperate IP addresses? (I have a router which I manage the ip addresses.)
Thank you for your time.

BTW, my Oribi router is in AP mode.

Re: Orbi router ethernet backhaul with both WAN and LAN ports used, is it a good setup?
What this sounds like is the router feeds a switch and everything is connected to the switch (other devices, Orbi router, Orbi satellites).
The traditional way to configure an Orbi system is to connect the Orbi directly to the primary router and then connect the switch to the Orbi.
When configured as a router, Yes, the WAN and LAN ports have different IP addresses. That is because the Orbi router creates an independent IP subnet for everything that it will be assigning IP addresses to. In AP mode, all IP addresses are assigned by the primary router, so the Orbi router has only one IP address.
As long as your system is "working", the unusual wiring pattern should have no impact on service life.

Re: Orbi router ethernet backhaul with both WAN and LAN ports used, is it a good setup?
No, it's not recommended to use both ports. When in AP mode, the WAN port is connected to the upstream main host router. The other LAN ports on the RBR can be connected to other wired devices or LAN switches with RBS connected to the LAN ports or LAN switches behind the RBR:
