Need trouble shooting help for Orbi RBR850 and NVG589

I've been posting on DSL Reports about this issue (see URL:  https://www.dslreports.com/forum/r33472738-Troubleshooting-Help) and it was suggested I cross post here as well.  We have not been able to determine if the problem is in the NVG589, the Orbi, or something else.  ATT wants me to do a factory reset on the NVG589 and the Orbi, both.  But I am reluctant to do that as I have MAC filtering enabled on my Orbi (it will be a pain retyping all that info into the router).

Will be traveling this week and will try to check for posts, but won't have access to the problem equipment until I return home.  Maybe redoing all those settings on the Orbi won't be so daunting after I have this little vacation!

Would it be convenient to state the specific problem again?  Reading through the referenced discussion, it is not clear (to me) what the problem is (or how it might be related to the customer router instead of the ISP modem).

Would help to understand what "MAC Filtering" means.  Is that a list of hardware MAC addresses that are not allowed to connect?

Just a random comment: There are two different types of Factory Reset in regard to Netgear Orbi routers:

  • The obvious situation is where all user settings are erased and the user then enters them all again manually.  In my case, this takes a little over two hours and is a major chore. (perhaps involving pain in a body part).  This is the last resort after every other possibility has failed.
  • A less onerous procedure is to:
    • Save a copy of the configuration.
    • Do the factory reset, but...
    • Go through all the setup pages, ignoring everything, until you reach the page that offers two choices:
      • Load a saved configuration, or
      • Create a configuration manually
    • That means:
      • Do not change the WiFi SSID. This keeps all those devices which are waiting for WiFi to reappear from connecting to the router and perhaps getting an IP address that you do not want them to have.
      • Do not accept the offer to register the router.
      • Do not enable Armor, Parental Controls...etc. etc.
    • Select to load a saved configuration and reload that configuration that was saved (above).
    • The entire process can take less than 10 minutes.

What Firmware version is currently loaded?
Be sure your using a good quality LAN cable between the modem and router. CAT6 is recommended.

Your ISP Modem already has a built in router and wifi. This would be a double NAT (two router) condition which isn't recommended. https://kb.netgear.com/30186/What-is-Double-NAT
https://kb.netgear.com/30187/How-to-fix-issues-with-Double-NAT
Couple of options,
1. Configure the modem for transparent bridge or modem only mode. Then use the Orbi router in router mode. You'll need to contact the ISP for help and information in regards to the modem being bridged correctly.
2. If you can't bridge the modem, disable ALL wifi radios on the modem, configure the modems DMZ/ExposedHost or IP Pass-Through for the IP address the Orbi router gets from the modem. Then you can use the Orbi router in Router mode.
3. Or disable all wifi radios on the modem and connect the Orbi router to the modem, configure AP mode on the Orbi router. https://kb.netgear.com/31218/How-do-I-configure-my-Orbi-router-to-act-as-an-access-point and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7LOcJ8GdDo&app=desktop

Try option #2 first...

I thought I posted one reply that addressed both of these replies--but I don't see it.  If it is not there, I can post it again.
