Re: Home Folder Dissapeared

It is not a matter of an up to date backup, there is a flaw in the system if a problem at Netgear can delete folders on a Nas unit by remote. People buy these units for security of their files, photos etc but apparently these are not even personal backup units as they are controlled more or less completely by Netgear.

i personally have lost years of family photos, videos, personal documents, the reason I bought this was because it was on a RAID system, I understand the hardware risks but for a company to delete personal folders is unacceptable and definitely was not in the small print!!

Re: ReadyCloud service went offline and Delete all user accounts and files

I am surprised that no one from Netgear responded to message thread yet.

I can not find the original post on this web site, but it recommended if you want to recover your data you can try this.

https://www.google.com/search?q=replicateMe&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8#q=reclaiMe+readynas&*

I can not confirm whether or not it will work, because I am working on the process myself.

The readycloud users are linked to the netgear readycloud , there is a cloud tab on the admin page. If you choose to leave the cloud then the cloud users are deleted and their home directories along with them. Now when netgear's cloud servers became unavailable for 'some reason' the NAS systems reacted as if the server had left the cloud hence all cloud users and their home directories were deleted.

Bad news if you didn't have an external back up or a seperate share where you backed up to then it is all gone.

Netgears response has so far been , ' it is your responsibilty to have a backup'

Once I was able to log in I changed my admin password and set the recovery email settings.

Then went to the log file to see what was going on.

It showed that two of the four user accounts were deleted about 10 seconds apart.

I am the only admin on this device so unless my 70 year old mother, 50 year old wife or 12 yr old daughter have recenly taken an interest in "that computer thing in the basement" i think something is afoot.

I have not checked to see what data was lost yet, if any. The major share folders I created still seem to be there, Music, Movies ....

My guess is that there is a backdoor into these devices that has now been exploited or there is a major flaw in the firmare/ OS that is randomly deleting users.

My solution to prevent backdoor access is to have the NAS turn on only when I will be home and using it then turn off when I go to bed.

If it's the firmware/ OS then we have to wait for Netgear and backup the backup.

Pretty lame.

Anything under the cloud users home directories will have gone all other shares 'should' be ok

Re: Cant access my http://readycloud.netgear.com site

There is no backdoor. If you bother reading the previous messages, I tried to bring some light on what happened.
The NAS unjoined ReadyCLOUD service due to a connection issue to the ReadyCLOUD server or something in those lines (this was the trigger). When unjoining from the master ReadyCLOUD account, the ReadyCLOUD users are deleted along with their home folders. Nobody connected to your NAS in order to delete some stuff.
And there is VERY little chance that you can recover any of it.
It shouldn't have happened but it happened.
In the meantime, you can access the NAS using local accounts.
If you want further info or confirmation, then you'll have to wait for communication from NETGEAR. I am.

Re: Cant access my http://readycloud.netgear.com site

So basically, the Readynas units are very vunerable and even using RAID, data can just be "deleted"
This is priceless!!
Loads of non replaceable memories just gone, not to mention people who have lost business data and the data was in the home folder, which should in theory ve the safest and most protected folder.

This isnt good enough, I didnt buy this as a beta test version

It seeems that i am now able to login to my account but it says my cloud is offline, when it clearly is not... and now, i cannot even login via the desktop app and the website says my NAS is offline still.

Are you on the local LAN ? if so go to the 'ipadress of the nas/admin' and login with admin/admin password

Then you should be able to go to the cloud tab, and turn the ready cloud back on - it is likely to be off which is why the system is showing up as offline

The bad news is that any 'Home directories' for the cloud users have been deleted and they are not likely to be recoverable

Re: Cant access my http://readycloud.netgear.com site

Happy World Backup Day.

Last night, I checked the status of a share backup from a primary ReadyNAS 628 to a backup ReadyNAS Ultra 6 Plus, and I happened to notice my sole cloud user home folder go poof and disappear on the backup NAS. I checked the primary NAS, and the cloud user home folder was already gone there, which is why it disappeared from the rsync backup set to delete files and folders deleted on the source. Fortunately,

A.  The cloud user home folder has been empty for quite some time, and

B.  There are additional backups of the primary NAS via rsync using the eSATA port to a FirmTek external enclosure, which has been around for years and which can backup shares to individual 8TB and 10TB hard drives.

Yeah, users need to have redundant redundancy, but NETGEAR has some splainin' to do. I've never been a fan of the automatic deletion of cloud user home folders upon deletion by any means of the cloud user account from the NAS.

Re: ReadyCloud Shows Drives as Offline

What a load of crap.  Sorry but I'm not happy at all.  I went into the admin and the cloud service was off.  I turn it back on and had to put my login information.  When i went to check the share options, they were all gone.  So I'm starting over with the cloud setup.  This will be the last netgear product I buy.  I wil probably trying convincing the person I need to, to purchase another brand of equipment.  These problems on Netgear's side are becoming a real pain.

@everyone Any new communication from NETGEAR? Anyone who contacted Support has more info?

@johngm Anyone from NETGEAR will give more info to the community? There seem to have been a significant number of users affected. The only concrete info was posted by @mdgm-ntgr 20 hours ago. It's probably time for an update.

I have this very same problem including my account being deleted at 3.51pm on 30th March.

Any suggestions why this would have happened??

Just got this from Netgear. Hello Luke,

Thank you for reaching out. The ReadyCLOUD server access has been restored: WEB and application access should now be ok.

Best Regards,

That's it?

At least it says we should be expecting the service to be usable again.

can log in to ReadyCLOUD, but my system is offline and can't login to the system itself, no local admin that I can remember. I wonder how they are going to activate those cloud logins...

are you on the LAN where the readynas is ? if so try 'ip of the nas/admin' then try 'admin'/'password' you might be lucky that it has been reset. It seems to have done with some people.

Re: User has been Auto deleted - all data lost

Sorry to bring bad news, once ReadyCLOUD home folders have been deleted, there's very little chance to recover any of their content, and you'd need data carving skills and BTRFS knowledge just to attempt it.

Re: Cant access my http://readycloud.netgear.com site

I'm away at the moment with limited access to the internet but engineering might have found a way to recover the data.

Please don't run any volume maintenance or make any changes to you volume if possible as these will reduce the chances of partially/fully successful data recovery. If you must access your data still on there for now I would boot to volume read-only mode.

If you can connect a USB HDD (with enough space to hold the deleted data) to your NAS and boot your NAS to tech support mode (a boot menu option), and PM me the 5-digit number you then get and your agreement to http://kb.netgear.com/20932/NETGEAR-Remote-Access-Policy I'll take a look when I'm back.
