RN214: owncloud installation / upgrade

Dear Netgear community,

I use netgear products for several years, but now I'm the owner of an RN214 NAS (already did the upgrade to OS 6.5). Of course I know basic information about networks, but I'm not familiar with ReadyNAS and Linux. My paln / project is to install my own owncloud device with this NAS. I tried to get some information before buying, but this was quite boring so that I bought the device to test it in reality.

I know that there is the possibility to use the owncloud from the app store of the RN214, BUT this is only version 6.0 as I saw. That's why I want to install a current version. Of course I already was here: https://owncloud.org/install/#

My questions:

1. Is it possible to download a software package on this page to install it on RN214. Is there any advantage when using the app store versions? Or would it be better to install 6.0 from the store and run an update (how would such an update be possible)?

2. How can I install ownCloud 9 for example?

3. Does sombody already have some kind of installation guide for my project?

Kind regards

Sebastian

You can get OwnCloud 9 here: https://rnxtras.com/addons/owncloud-9-r6all

You would go to the Apps tab of the web admin interface, click the Upload button and install this. You can install this direct. No need to install an earlier version first.

Best to use an app designed for the ReadyNAS as a vanilla Debian package would do some bad things for the ReadyNAS such as store data on the 4GB OS partition that may fill it.

  • Espacially I mean this solution: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_C9XFWWLVlw

Why does this force problems and why is it a problem due to conflicts with OS partition? The owncloud is visible as the one installed as app. Where is the difference? Is the shown update procedure for a app version the same like shown in the video?

So long as you install it in such a way that you don't store stuff on the 4GB OS partition that should be on the data volume you should be fine. However the vanilla Debian package by default would store stuff on the root volume that shouldn't be there. 4GB is plenty of space for the OS and configuration, but you can quickly fill it if you put stuff on it that shouldn't be stored there.

With the app from rnxtras you would be getting something already configured to store things in appropriate places.

Ok, I understand. I am already in contact with whocares, but nevertheless of course I want to learn something. How would a configuration work or what would I have to do to avoid storing the cloud data in the OS partitition? Where is this partition respectivelly how can I see that the data is stored there or not there? Or is there any step for step installation guide beside "using an app" for the installation of owncloud on ReadyNAS OS6? or is the way shown in my posted video the 'correct' one?
