Enable password protection on webserver share
Hi all,
I've set up a home server on my readynas duo. I've also got the home dns service running on the router so I'd like to password protect my web pages.
I've tried adding a .htaccess file but just get server errors (500). I've searched the web and this forum and there are various threads that are similar, but nowhere can I find all the bits in one place. Some seem to say it's easy (but don't say how), while other imply that the required modules are not installed.
It seems like I need to modify the Shares.conf file (or add a new conf file to the addons dir) but I'm not quite clear as to what needs to be in this file. Also I guess I would still need to add a htaccess file to the web share folder?

- Go to Services -> Standard File Protocols -> HTTP/S and select the share you wish to allow http access to in the drop down list. This assumes that you've already enabled HTTP access to it from the "shares" section of frontview.
Then once that share is selected, set the option "Login authentication on this share:" to enabled. Next time you access that share via your browser it should prompt you for a username / password. I would make sure to type the address into your browser as https:// rather than http:// though so communications (and thus your username and password submission) are protected from snooping. The access list is users defined on the NAS user list AFAIK. So you can log in as admin or any other pre-defined user on the NAS (except root).
e.g: https://IP-of-your-nas/web-share/
Bear in mind this will only protect the initial access. Any other features you link to in subsequent pages will require their own security. Not too bad if your linking to modules like SABnzbd+ or Transmission which already have password security available for access. AFAIK the ReadyNAS doesn't support .htaccess files. It's been posted about by the Jedi's elsewhere on this forum. - Solved it, and the problem with very slow responses to the phpMyadmin page, and the problem with the hidiously slow transfer rates average 6 to 10 MB/s (on some days downloadin from the web is faster)...
