Dead Readynas - extract data

How does diskinternals work? Is this software I install onto a linux machine, and then connect the first(?) disk from the readynas as a an internal drive onto a windows machine on the same network as the linux one? How could it retrieve data from just one of the drives, when presumably it is spread over the 3 that I have in it?
