Ultra 6 with two RAID configs?

I apologize for the basic questions, I've tried to read these forums and other guides for an answer but I'm hoping someone here can help.
I have an Ultra 6 with 2 drives, and I'm looking to add two more (for a separate purpose/RAID configuration).
Is that possible?
Specifically, I have two 2TB 5400 RPM drives that I would like to have configured as a backup drive (Time Machine and duplication of certain volumes from the non-backup disks I want to add to the Ultra).
I would like to add two more 7200 RPM drives that would act as a file server.
These would be independently RAID configured. This would offer some protection against drive failure (although I realize it is not a true backup solution).
Then, I have room for two more drives to expand one or both of the RAID configurations.

Is it possible to use the ReadyNAS RAIDiator-x86 Version 4.2.25 software to configure the disks this way, as two separate RAIDs?

So you want two RAID-1 volumes? Flex-RAID RAID-1 volumes are not expandable. Flex-RAID gives increased flexibility on what volumes you can have but not all volumes are expandable.
  • Honestly, I haven't looked closely enough at the RAID setups... I would even give up flexibility on the expansion in order to be able to configure two RAID setups.
The backup volume would likely grow (so flexibility here is good) up to 4 disks, and the file server could be less expandable staying at the original 2 disks.
Is it possible, depending on what RAID setup is there?
I'm mostly wanting to understand what the ReadyNAS management software would support for two volumes.

mdgm is saying that you can set up two. But that since you can't expand a volume from 2 to 3 disks you will need to destroy the old, create the new with the additional drive (restoring data from backups).

The other option is to set up a third volume, and split the backups across them.

Thanks. Will those options appear in the NetGear User Control Panel? Is there an order, process or trick? Or, will it prompt me whenever I add a new drive?

After switching to Flex-RAID you would see the options under Volumes in Frontview. After adding a drive you would see the option to add a new volume that includes it.

    To switch to Flex-RAID:

    1. Backup data
    2. Verify backup is good
    3. Do a factory default
    4. Discover NAS in RAIDar
    5. During 10 minute countdown, click setup, choose Flex-RAID and confirm your choice.
  • Quick update and wanted to say thanks for your tips mdgm and StephenB.
I was able to backup and rebuild the RAID volumes into the Flex-RAID structure I needed.
In hindsight, it seems pretty obvious that the NAS would support multiple volumes! But it wasn't obvious to me at the time and you helped confirm it for me before I went through all the work.
    Thanks. :)
