Thanks StephenB for your reply.
If you say 'try' to connect a disk......, I get the feeling you are not sure this will help.
Since yesterday I cannot even enter the NAS thru RAIDar, so no view.
Just an idea: Can I take out the discs, do a factory reset and insert the discs again?
Thanks for your help.

No that will not work.
You could factory reset with a spare disk, but if you then insert the old disks you will be back at square one - the OS is stored on the disks and it appears that this is where your problem lies. If you put them back with the nas on then the disks would be wiped.
If you have a duo v1 then retrieving your data using Linux reader reading disk 1 usually does work and you should try it.

Thanks for your help again.
Another thought crossed my mind:
My DUO RDN2000 has two 1Tb discs placed in RAID 1 (Mirroring). So both have the same content. What if I take out one disc and reset the DUO. The inserted disc will be formatted. When place the first disc back in the DUO it will start mirroring again and hopefully my problem is solved.Which tray should I use for which disc?Hope to hear from you.Best regards - StephenBOct 20, 2015Guru - Experienced User

Shut down the system, and use linux reader in a Windows PC on disk 1( http://www.diskinternals.com/linux-reader/ ). If that doesn't see the data, then try again with disk 2.

I have tried both discs wth two linux-readers, no luck. All I get is a home window where reader sees both discs, but cannot get in to save files.
I hoped to attache an image but that doesn't work (how do I do that?).

I like to do a factory reset but first want to save my data.
What confuses me is the difference in factory reset instructions:
The manual says: .... hold the System Reset switch for 30 seconds after powering on the system. You will see the disk LEDs flash for a second time to signify that the command has been accepted. Warning: This process reinstalls the firmware and resets all disk configurations, wiping out any data you might have on the NAS.
While http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/24874 says: Factory reset. Performs a short disk test and then allows you to reset your system to the factory defaults or switch between X-RAID and Flex-RAID. The system performs the disk test, which takes about 5 minutes, waits 10 minutes, and then restores the system to its factory settings. During the 10-minute window, you can shut down the system to avoid erasing its settings and files, or you can use RAIDar to format the system’s disks as Flex-RAID instead of X-RAID. If you do not shut down the system or use RAIDar, the system is reset to factory settings, all files on the system are erased, and the disks are formatted using the same disk configuration that was previously used.
Which one is right?
So far I have:
Done a Firmware re-installation (2x)
Removed both discs and connected them to my Windows PC. With the following software I tried to get to my data ; Ubuntu 14.04.3, Linux Mint 17.2 Rafaela and Diskinternals Linux Reader for Windows. They all see the disc connected however I cannot get to the data.
Pinging works, I get 4 answers back.
RAIDar 6.0 constantly says 'system is booting'. My RAIDar 4.1.3 Frontview shows the Start Up screen but the setup-button doesn't light up.
IP-address in the browser says 'connection refused.
What more ways are there to get to my data and save them? I am getting desperate.
Thanks you all.

Furthermore I have connected the Duo V1 to a laptop, with same results as connted to the pc.

Both are right, but the second doesn't mean what you think.
A factory reset always destroys all data. The 10 minute window just gives you a chance to use flexraid instead of xraid. But the flexraid volume is also new (and empty). If you shut down the system before the window expires, the factory reset is simply canceled (so no changes at all happen).
I think you are out of options you can do on your own. I think your next step is to contact netgear support and ask about data recovery.
There are a couple of other data recovery options. Seagate has a service, and Western Digital lists some partners on their web site.
