The v1 firmware uploaded to R6400v2

Hi,

I have a problem with my Netger R6400v2 router. By mistake I've uploaded the firmware for the v1. I've tried to upload the correct v2 firmware via TFTP (using tftp2.exe, tftpd64 and Windows 10 commands) but no results. Also tried to upload via GUI but no effects. Is there anything I can do to repair my v2 router? Or maybe sameone try to explain me step-by-step how to upload the right firmware using TFTP? I must say that the v2 with v1 firmware works quite good (I'm actually surprised about that) but half of the options are bugged and doesnt work propertly.

Thanks in advice for any response.

I found the guide where was explained how to flash router with nmrpflash. Not that hard to perform as I thought. 🙂

What does the router do now?  LED indicators?  Any network
communication?

"tried" or "no results" is not a useful problem description.  It does
not say what you did.  It does not say what happened when you did it.
As usual, showing actual actions with their actual results (error
messages, LED indicators, ...) can be more helpful than vague
descriptions or interpretations.

"tried"?  "no effects"  Does the router's management web site ("GUI")
work at all?  See "not a useful problem description", above.

Where's your "step-by-step" description of what you did, and what
happened when you did it?

> [...] I must say that the v2 with v1 firmware works quite good [...]

What, exactly, happens when you try to load the right firmware using
the normal (ADVANCED > Administration > Router Update : Locate and
select the upgrade file on your hard disk)?

If that fails, then I'd try the TFTP recovery scheme, but if that
fails, then a better problem description than "no results" would be
needed to try to understand why.

Re: The v1 firmware uploaded to R6400v2

1. The router act normal (all of the LED are white). I can connect with the internet and use it (with cable and via Wi-Fi).

2.  In tftp2.exe I recieved "Unable to get responses from server." message; In tftpd64 when I click "PUT" button, "block#0" appeared but nothing happend; In Windows cmd tftp i recieved "Connect request failed" message. Each time I turn off and on the router (with reset button holding at the back) before I proceed with the upload the firmware. (I bind the IP adress too). After that the router boot normal and is usable but still with the v1 firmware.

3. I can get acces to GUI via web browser. It looks like the one from the v2 firmware but there is caption said its R6400 (not R6400v2). When I try to upload from my hard drive the v2 firmware through "Router update" after a few seconds the GUI respond with that message: "This firmware file is incorrect! Please get the firmware file again and make sure it is the correct firmware for this product.".

To sum up: my router works normal, I can connect with ethernet cable and Wi-Fi. I've tried three different tftp methods, all of them fail.

I think the tftp might help but I dont understand when I have to proceed with the upload during restart.

I'd forget the fancy third-party programs, and stick to the built-in,
simple, command-line TFTP client program.  In any case, you need to
configure the network interface on your computer with a static IP
address (et c.), which steps you haven't mentioned.

> [...] (I bind the IP adress too). [...]

Not a very detailed description of anything.

> [...] "This firmware file is incorrect! [...]

If the firmware is too smart to let you load firmware for a different
model, then the TFTP scheme may be your best bet.

Do you ever see the Power LED flashing as it says in those KB
articles?

What happens if you ignore the Reset button when you start the thing?

Whenever it works?  Some experimentation may be needed.

Re: The v1 firmware uploaded to R6400v2

Just one thing to add that has not come up already, there is a more thorough "recovery reset" that you could try:

  • Press reset for 30 seconds
  • Keep pressing reset while removing power
  • Keep pressing reset for another 30 seconds while apply power

This is something that Netgear sometimes requires when people are doing fancy stuff in beta tests.

I am surprised that you managed to force the wrong firmware on to the device. The process usually fails because the update process is smart enough to spot the mismatch. Are you sure that it took? After all, your router is still working.

That's good news.

Care to tell us what worked for you? It might help someone who turns up later with a similar issue.

Re: The v1 firmware uploaded to R6400v2

Interesting that nmrpflash worked where TFTP failed.

Looks like you have added the R6400v2 to the list of those known to work.
