Unable to load new firmware on R6300v2

Unable to load new firmware on R6300v2

My Router (1.0.4.2) is reporting a new version is available (1.0.4.46_10.0.93) but it fails to download the file internally...

When I went to the Netgear download site and chose my model it shows that there is an even newer version available: 1.0.4.52

I manually downloaded and extracted the file but the router reports that both are invalid:

This firmware file is incorrect! Please get the firmware file again and make sure it is the correct firmware for this product.

Just in the 4.46 version there are 27 fixes applied, I really want to get updated... HELP!

Re: Unable to load new firmware on R6300v2

prior to uploading it, did you extract the download?

right click on the file you download (if on windows) and extract it.

Then try it.

Re: Unable to load new firmware on R6300v2

Indeed, I extracted it before trying to apply... Previous to extracting I tried to apply it as a .zip and it returned a "not a .chk file" error.

What is the name of that "incorrect!" "firmware file"?

   As it should have.

If you really do have an R6300v2, and you're really specifying a file
like "R6300v2-V1.0.4.52_10.0.93.chk", and the router hates it, then I'd
try a smaller jump.  "1.0.4.2" to "1.0.4.52" in one step might be too
far.  It's unusual, but such things have been reported.

I tried:

  • R6300v2-V1.0.4.46_10.0.93.chk

and:

  • R6300v2-V1.0.4.52_10.0.93.chk

I will try to locate, download, and apply an upgrade file closer to 1.0.4.2.. will let you know!

Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your model number, and look
for Downloads.  (For older versions, under Firmware and Software
Downloads, look for "View Previous Versions".)  Find the kit(s).
Download the kit(s) you want.  Read the "Release Notes" file for
instructions.  (In the User Manual, look for "firmware", and,
especially, for a topic like "Manually Upload Firmware to the Router".)
When that fails because of a deficient User Manual, try:

   Please do.

Re: Unable to load new firmware on R6300v2

@antinode

Ok, Here is a copy and paste from my router page:

    Firmware Version
    V1.0.4.2_10.0.74

That seems to mirror the v1.0.4.2 version available from Netgear... I downloaded and tried to install the first firmware file newer than that:

  • R6300v2-V1.0.4.6_10.0.76.chk

but my router responded:

This firmware file is incorrect! Please get the firmware file again and make sure it is the correct firmware for this product.

I even found my original firmware file from 2015 and tried to install it but was given the same error... Is there a way to do the firmware upgrade without using the netgear router webpage or something?

Re: Unable to load new firmware on R6300v2

Thanks for that, I managed to find it pretty quick after I sent that message just by going through the support menu and walking through the icons to my router page... The resulting downloads page was much easier to find things on and I have downloaded all the firmware versions available.

I am now trying a firmware upgrade from the Netgear Genie app...  NETGEAR Genie is reporting th router is up to date... Will look for the manual upload directions... The router's web interface has provided nothing but rejection... Will let you know.

I see nothing wrong with what you claim to be doing, only with the
way the router is responding.

As you can see, that fellow didn't reveal an outcome, so I can't say
whether it's an actual solution.  A Web or forum search for, say:

      "This firmware file is incorrect!"

might find more valuable info.

A more recent thread on TFTP than the one cited in that old one is:

Others (of varying value) abound.  (Search for TFTP.)

Re: Unable to load new firmware on R6300v2

Thanks for those links.. I don't seem to be successful at connecting with either TFTP or telnet.

I tried the article you linked and then found this article linked later which uses the TFTP client "included" with Windows 10.

https://kb.netgear.com/000059634/How-to-upload-firmware-to-a-NETGEAR-router-using-Windows-TFTP

The issue I seem to be having (following directions) is that my power light never "blinks" it just comes on orange and stays that way until it turns green.

Additionally, attempts to load the firmware from the web interface seems to terminate within the first 3 seconds.

Re: Unable to load new firmware on R6300v2

@antinode I followed the old guide (linked below) from the netgear forums I did a 30-30-30 reset and have been non-stop pinging the router with a 2 (m)sec timeout... It looks like there is a 10(m)sec window for TFTP to connect, does that sound right?

Guide: https://community.netgear.com/t5/General-WiFi-Routers-Non/Guide-How-to-quot-unbrick-quot-your-WGR614...

ping command: ping -t -w 2 192.168.1.1

Ping results (timings vary each time):

Request timed out.
Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time=3ms ttl=100
Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time<1ms ttl=100

After the router resumes ping reponses the tftp window reports "Connect request failed"

Update: I did finally see the flashing power light... When I power on the device, let it boot fully and then press and hold the reset it either flashes on, bright on, on (repeating) or on, off, on (repeating) with the wireless led lit solid and blue.

I haven't been able to complete a tftp connection so far.

These modern browsers and their ability to detect a network connection update makes this process 10x more frustrating as they keep trying to detect the internet through the "new" connection and usually grab focus / open a new window or tab... Trying to stay with it though 😛

Re: Unable to load new firmware on R6300v2

The good news is I have been able to flash the router to several newer versions... The bad news is that I apparently goofed things up...

I downloaded and ran netc to succesfully enable telnet and then tried an nvram erase + reboot (which succeeded).  However that still didn't allow me to get into TFTP so I found this post on dd-wrt (https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=322917) that suggested an "erase linux" command from telnet (also succeeded).

Now the router boots to TFTP mode everytime you power cycle... and never exits... Additionally, telnet is no longer connecting and the reset button seems to have no effect (unless you press it at power on).

Is there a way to get the router to stop going to TFTP and load the new firmware or have I placed myself in the position to need a USB -> FTDI adapter?

Thanks for your time, consideration, and any tips you might have.
