Balancing does not help with "no space left" despite capacity available.
Hi all, I've got an RN516 with a six disk xraid volume that reports no space left, despite having 1.6TB free. It is 6 x 12TB for about 55TB usable. problem: root@ReadyNas:/nas/Data# touch test...

yep, and no way out without having 45TB space to copy to.
Vertical expansion would add another RAID group (md125), but that wouldn't necessarily give you more free space on md127.
I've seen the add-a-drive idea, but I am also skeptical. It's not much different than concatenating a third RAID group to the file system. Still, if you have a suitable drive you could try it.
The RAID-0 conversion approach is guaranteed to make md127 bigger. But it is high risk, and you might well lose data. If I went down that path myself, I'd use tech support mode (and keep the system in tech support mode until I reversed the conversion). Sandshark has experimented with these commands, but maybe didn't try RAID-5 to RAID-0.

Seems like a good idea to have a backup before I attempt that. And if I had the backup I would just recreate.
Assuming I can find the spare storage, do I have an option to not use btrfs during recreation of the volume on the RN516? I have recently discovered that it is possible to have strong feelings about a file system.

The only way to use something other than BTRFS is on a USB drive, unless you completely replace ReadyNASOS. In ReadyNASOS, a share is a BTRFS sub-volume, and you can't have those in another file system.
BTRFS actually offers a lot. But you have to realize a NAS is not a "set and forget" device and "check in" with the GUI once in a while (at least weekly is my recommendation). Having properly configured alerts can help as well, but nothing beats checking the log periodically.

I haven't ignored it at all; regularly logging and updating the OS, checking for errors or warnings, connected to a UPS and email alerts. I just had no idea the nas came with a built in time bomb if I committed the terrible sin of...using it. The RN516 is my 3rd consecutive readyNAS - I've been using them for 20 years. I'm sure snapshots are nice, but using the space on my disks without triggering a silent read only bomb is a lot nicer.
So the solution is: buy a device that doesn't use btrfs. Ouch.I want to thank you Sandshark and StephenB for your help here. This stuff is not for the faint of heart, and I would not have even managed to diagnose without your expertise.

FWIW, your data is always at risk when it is only on one device. So you always need a backup plan for anything you care about.
