Enabling WINS Server on ReadyNAS causes problems

All,

I have a ReadyNAS Ultra 2+ connected to a Netgear GS108 switch which is cascaded from a WNDR4000. I also have another Ultra 2+, two Ultra 2's, and a DNS-323 aslo connected to the GS108.

I was experiencing issues with losing my list of Network computers (by name) if the primary Ultra 2+ was restarted. So I decided to enable WINS on the primary Ultra 2+ and add the IP address to the local Windows machines under the WINS addresses box.

This caused all the names to always show up any time the primary Ultra 2+ was running. However, if I tried to connect to any of the other 3 ReadyNAS boxes (or the DNS-323) using their name or IP address it would time out and say they were anavailable. Moreover, it would always (let me repeat ALWAYS) force the connection speed from 1 Gb down to 100 Mb. I could restore connectivity to the other boxes by disabling WINS, however to regain 1 Gb I had to power cycle the ReadyNAS Ultra 2+.

I tested this 7 times (or more). Same result every time. Enabling WINS made all other NAS boxes unavailable but listed in the local network and forced the connection to 100 Mb.

As of right now, I have turned WINS off and my connection is a stable 1 Gb. I set the 3 local Windows machines and my laptop to never be the Browse Master and this seems to have forced the NAS boxes (at least one of them) to be the Browse Master, but I would like to know if anyone else has had a similar experience with WINS. I would prefer to use WINS rather than rely on the Master Browser election process.

Can anyone help me with the WINS Server issues?
