New drive showing dead, but its not
I had a WD drive going bad, and swapped with the exact model. Frontview kept showing it as dead, and Smart+ is greyed out. The logs, however, show the volume will be rebuilt and the front display has "C: Unprotected"

Disk 1 Seagate ST32000542AS 1863 GB , 35 C / 95 F , Write-cache ON OK
Disk 2 Seagate ST32000542AS 1863 GB , 36 C / 96 F , Write-cache ON OK
Disk 3 WDC WD20EADS-22R6B0 1863 GB , 38 C / 100 F , Write-cache ON OK
Disk 4 WDC WD20EADS-22R6B0 1863 GB , 0 C / 32 F Dead
Any ideas? This is the second new drive with same results.
Thanks
W

- wreckedem1AspirantOh yeah.. Its an Ultra 4 running 4.2.26
- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserAre you hot-inserting? If not, maybe try that.
- wreckedem1AspirantI tried both with same results.
- wreckedem1AspirantI just bought the WD20EFRX, and it still shows dead and the Smart+ is greyed out. What am I missing here? I have rebooted, tried hot vs cold swaps with same result.
- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserAre you still under warranty? If so, maybe try support.
- IraraAspirantI'm having a similar issue, also a ReadyNas ultra 4. The front view show "C: Unprotected", but in the logs don't even show that a disk removal was detected.
I also tried switching to an additional new hard drive and still the same issue.
Several months ago i had a different disk failure that i was able to hot swap with no issues, but this one just doesn't seem to react.
Any progress on the issue? - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredPlease don't revive long dead threads.
Do you have a backup? - IraraAspirantI do have backup's, on an exact same NAS device.
But that's not the point, i want to understand what is wrong with this one.
And like i mentioned this device runs all the production VM's and if i need to go to the back up's this will mean a lot of down time. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredCan you send me your logs (see the Sending Logs link in my sig)?
- IraraAspirantI was finally able to schedule some downtime yesterday to reboot the NAS box.
After the Reboot it recognized the disc and started synchronizing.
By morning everything was back to normal.
Thanks for the help, i sent you logs anyways.
