No gigabit connection on my ReadyNAS NV+ v1
Hi everyone! I just got here due I’m having an issue that apparently it has been from day one but never considered as an issue due I never required the full speed capabilities of the NAS. Well, here is the issue.
I have been using my NAS as forever at 100Mbit full duplex, my old router only works at that speed. Now, I got a new modem which includes 4 LAN ports capable of 1Gbps speeds and I’m trying to connect my NAS to this modem, but, when connected to the modem, the NAS is not getting the IP address correctly from the modem, it just assigns itself the default 192.168.168.168 address. The following are all the symptoms and different configurations that I tried:
1.-On the NAS, when it is connected to the modem, I see the Green LED ON and the amber never turns ON, this means that the NAS is working at 1Gbps (according to the manual).
2.-On the modem webpage, I can see on the LAN ports list, on the one I connected the NAS, a 1000BASE connection, no IP address and no device name, the weird part, is that I only see TX packets but 0 RX packets on that port.
3.-Modem green LED is also ON, amber OFF.
4.-I connected my laptop to the modem, just to confirm 1Gbps connection, and IP address was assigned correctly and I see activity on both TX and RX.
5.-I connected my laptop directly to the NAS, the NAS assigned itself the default IP address of 192.168.168.168 as expected due it is no DHCP server.
6.-Laptop IP address was assigned as 192.168.168.100 manually, Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0.
7.-If I try to get into the webpage of the NAS from the laptop, no luck.
8.-On the laptop, connection properties it appears as 1Gbps and the same as in the modem, I see TX activity but no RX.
9.-On the network card configuration I forced the connection of the laptop side to 100Mbps full duplex. With that, I was able to get into the NAS webpage.
10.-Something that I will assume is that if the device, either one the laptop or the NAS is capable of 1Gbps, I should be able to force the connection by selecting the “Speed & Duplex” option, but in the case of the laptop, it only shows 10/100 Full/Half and the auto, on the NAS, only shows the 100 Full/Half and auto options. Not sure why not showing the 1Gbps option.
11.-I used different cables, at least the one it worked between the laptop and the modem at 1Gbps was also used with the NAS on both modem and laptop connection. All them CAT 5e, I even found and try a 5e STP, same results.
At this point I can’t be sure, but, modem and laptop work together, and NAS is not working with neither one. In both cases shows similar symptoms where it looks like the NAS is not transmitting anything.
Thanks in advance, any help is appreciated!
Best Regards.
Hardware details:
ReadyNAS NV+ model RND4000-100NAS. RAIDiator 4.1.15 (v1)
Modem Arcadyan model VRV9519BWAC23. Configured has DHCP server, it has 4 LAN ports.
Network Card: Qualcomm Atheros in my laptop.
I'm thinking this is almost certainly a problem with the NIC in the NAS.
Fast ethernet uses only pins 1,2,3,6, and autonegotiation only uses those two pairs.
"Since negotiation takes place on only two pairs, if two gigabit devices are connected through a cable with only two pairs, the devices will successfully choose 'gigabit' as the highest common denominator (HCD), but the link will never come up." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gigabit_Ethernet
That quote seems to matcb your symptoms. But since you've tested with several cables (including one that works with the laptop), then it seems likely that something within the NAS NIC has failed on pins 4,5,7, or 8.

Hello Abelynux,
When the NAS is connected to the laptop directly and you set static IP address 192.168.168.100 on the laptop, are you able to ping the NAS?
It does seem there is something wrong with the NIC's gigabit connection. Try setting a manual IP on the NAS that is on the same IP range of your network then see if it gets the same results.

Hi JennC!
Thanks a lot for the reply!
When the NAS is connected to the laptop, if the network card on the laptop is configured as Auto, no ping and no webpage from the NAS, if I set the laptop network as 100MBit full duplex, ping and webpage works.
I have tried the static IP configuration on the NAS with the modem network/subnetmask, same results.
Thanks again and Best Regards.

Hello Abelynux,
It could already be a problem on the NIC of the NAS and you already have the latest FW version.
I may need to check this with others who can probably assist you and get back to you as soon as possible. For the meantime, let's see and wait if other community members have ideas that they can share.
Thanks for your cooperation!
